Note to Steve Vai...

Kapo, you know I love you, but.. really? Ripping on Vai's technique?

Yea, uh...there is some wanking, but I don't see any slop. I just don't really have much to say about this. Here we have one of the most recognizable tones and styles replacing someone else with one of the most recognizable tones and styles. I hear a difference, but in the immortal words of Sterling Archer, "what the shit?"

I definitely heard some overdubbed parts (like someone above mentioned), but that's pretty much to be expected.

Relax fanboys! I didn't realize that the Vai brigade would come out blazin like this that's for sure..

I assure you I am not trolling.. I am a regular here and i tend not to. What i will say is that i too have seen vai live. For what he does, yeah he is good. But what he plays?Never been that impressed except for the classical diddy he played in crossroads. (was that even him who WROTE that? There is another player credited as well) His work with Whitesnake and DLR is more interesting rythmically to me than lead wise. I personally think he is overated. He is smoke and mirrors and effects. Ever seen that Dimebag clinic where he hits the whammy pedal and does the Vai run? Yeah my thoughts exactly... this playing here demonstrates his deficiencies in my opinion. As always, I felt it within my right to post on a gear forum. While I am at it, I also appologize for not playing a Suhr or owning a Friedman! :scared:

PS- Vinnie Moore could probably have taken that gig and killed it. No need for the rest of us! No worries, I still like you guys :P

Steve Vai is smoke and mirrors.

Dude........just..........stop..........really.

Guys, if you listen closely, there is something very interesting about his solos. Skip to the 8:00 mark. If you listen, at around 8:10, the audio crossfades during his solo and what I assume is a pre-recorded' version of the solo cuts in, so he is just playing air guitar along to that part. Same thing happens at 4:13. If you watch, he isn't actually playing the solo and is just air guitar-ing to a pre-recorded solo. It finally fades into his actual live guitar solo at 4:54. WOW!

Listened and watched closely. Don't think so.

There is a definite overdub/splice at 4:03-4:54 for whatever reason either technical problem or maybe he just wanted a better take..either way I loved Vai with Alcatrazz, enjoyed him more in that band than any of the DLR stuff he went on to do..the studio album 'Disturbing The Peace' was brilliant!

honestly, smoke and mirrors is how i describe this guy! and stage fans too.... you gotta have a fan blowing in your hair while you make your best O face.

Pure fucktardery. This guy is one of the most innovative and influential musicians to come out of the 80's. His style is distinct and when you hear him play you know who it is. He's not always my cup of tea but sweet jebus this is just pure stupidity. Troll.

Is not. It's unpossible.

You're right but it's probably just composite video from a couple of different shows. Definitely sounds like a single show. I've seen him several times with DLR and he never missed a note while slinging his guitar 20 feet up in the air. Vai doesn't need any help getting a good take! lol

Vai is awesome. Dude was pretty much flawless when I saw him 2-3 years ago. Puts on a crazy show too, its hard to move around and be entertaining while playing tricky music.

Yup, i guess because you have stated it, it must be true! Sorry guys, i was not blown away by him when i saw him live and i never have been. Guess we listen with different ears. His playing at the show I have posted is pretty crappy in my opinion. I guess I just hold my guitar heroes to a higher standard . So I guess this is what it feels like to be the only guy in a billy lades thread who likes his amps?! I will let this die down for a bit and come back in a few days when you guys like me again.

WTF kind of troll BS thread is this???

I was a disciple of Yngwie. His Alcatrazz work kicked-ass. But so did Vai's and I like "Disturbing the Peace" as much as "No Parole". What the hell are you high on???

I can understand not liking his music or tone or theatrics but to say his technique and skills are lacking is crazy talk.

He definitely improved into the late 80's and 90's on. The Vai now I just don't like his music or find his phrasing that big of a deal. However i stick by my guns that he was big time off his game and sloppy in this Alcatraz gig. That's all. Guess you guys don't hear it. I do however like his rythm playing on everything after this! but that's it..anyway i will stop "trolling" now.

Wonder if Steve is still doing the honeybees. It would be awesome to have fresh honey like that.
