This is where anyone with half a brain stops reading.

Nevermind that, how about the Rangers? Looking damned good this year.

To me, Vai has his own unique style. He's not going to try to "fit" in to another band by imitating the original guitar player...Vai is an original.

You may not like his style, hell, I find it a bit much at times, but you really can't knock his abilities. And just because we don't agree with you doesn't necessarily mean we don't understand what's going on musically. Ya know, did you ever consider that maybe YOU don't know what's going on?

That sir is a definite possibility!

'Just to be perfectly clear, my remarks were not directed at anyone specifically. They're just meant in general.

Honestly i dont know why you guys tear into each other. Its childish and petty.
Now lets go see if Michael R/T has posted another vid of his Major, like he just bought it or if BrentSSL has any other thoughts on amps in general!

By definition, I think this means it's appropriate for online communications.

lol so true.. I am guilty of being drawn into childish pissing contests from time to time as well. With all the kids starving in the world and homeless people without a roof over their heads, I think a few disagreements on a forum are survivable. I also will only ever think of Graham Bonnet typing in caps now. Damn that was funny. I watched some old Alcatrazz this morning. That dude really does only have one volume. LOUD.

Now let me check out that Michael R/T vid..

You probably never should have taken the Alcatrazz gig.... yikes he is horrible. Vibrato and terrible sloppy alternate picking. What would he do if his effects were taken away? That whammy effect... without it, would anything sound that impressive?

Watched the vid, thought Steve killed it  wish I could have attended back in the day. Didn't hear the slop, maybe one of us has shit in their ears? To split hairs, Steve has said in interviews that his alternate picking is a weakness. I think that has to do with the music he hears in his head. Steve is the epitome of focus and dedication, if he was hearing rapid alternate picked 128'th notes he'd put in 16 hr days till he had it down. Picking on Steve Vai's technique, wow, really?

Yeah and whats with that haircut and handle on the guitar, dude needs to take some lessons ... [pun intended for the dumbasses]

If its possible to make love to a guitar i believe he's doing it here.

Fuckin' beautiful song and playing, his command and control of the instrument is what good playing should look like, effortless with no signs of a struggle. I've learned more just watching Steve play than any lessons of any kind!

I have been a fan of Vai for a long time. However, I have often thought that he is capable of so much more. But he has his own thing going on. Just about everyting he doesn on the instrument is unique and different. It may not be to everyone's liking but it's out there.

I sat a few rows from the stage at a small club in the 90s and saw him play the Attitude Song with Mike Keneally live. Both playing note for note. It was the single most impressive gutiar performance I have seen to date. Even ran into him a pizza joint after the show. Nicest guy you could ever meet.

Vai has a very distinct style/sound that he seems to be very happy with. I have no doubt in my mind that if he wanted to change it or play pretty much anything on guitar that he could do it.

While I appreciate that sentiment (and often agree)... the fiery, passionate side of me loves to see players like Gary Moore laying-into their axes with reckless abandon, doing battle, and wringing the life out of it. Govan's effortless gymnastics are impressive, but Moore always just looked like he was EARNING every note right then and there. SRV was another guy like that. S'all good. ;)

I agree with this. I like Beck for that too. He always seems like he's looking for new approachs on the fly, especially with older material. I'll always love Moore's machine gun runs up the neck. That Strat sounded like it was about to snap!

So you think Steve would have been a "success" had he not taken that gig? Yes, we can only wonder where he would have gotten to if not for that ill fated detour that completely derailed his career.

Beck is from another planet entirely. Love his schtick, but it's just so far out of my sphere of reality (how I think and play) that it's hard for me to fully connect with it -- though I appreciate and respect the hell out of it. I watch the Ronnie Scott's DVD from time to time, but honestly... I watch it more for Tal Wilkenfeld than Beck. What a friggin Q-T-Pi.

I know what you mean. I would never try and cop his licks, just listen to his esoteric shenanigans and enjoy it. What I like about Tal is she holds her own in the band. Christ, your drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta. I think she might be Australian, which is nice too. And yes, she knows how to center a guitar strap...

Wow, some of you guys are harsh! I nominate the most critical Vai fans to the Council Of Critics so you can illuminate us with your combined wisdom and quips on all things religious and political too. Greatness knows no bounds.

On a side note, everyone knows that whoever that hidden guitar player in that Gangnam style hit is the bestest; pure poetry and restrained composition (sniffs cork).
