I posted about these guys in a thread over at GAB and I thought some here might dig this...

I grew up listening to these guys in the 70s when I was a kid in New York and although they are not metal, the guitar playing is incredible and I love the singer. The tasty guitar playing really made me start to think beyond simple pentatonics. Check 'em out, incredible band. Lots of jazz influence and great, old hard rock. This is from their best album in '74, so consider that this is really old stuff. They never got much beyond local clubs and stuff, but the drummer worked with Vinnie Moore and Blues Saraceno and was in Twisted Sister and Widowmaker:

Check out this instrumental:

Great hard rock with great singing:

Some are not gonna get this, but I think it's crazy cool:

Good Rats! Lead singer Peppi Marchello recently passed away. RIP. I know John Gatto, the lead guitarist. Awesome player and person. The Rats RULED Long Island in the 70's

Cool! Singer sounds like Noddy Holder from Slade who Dubrow was trying to sound like.

Peppi had a band in the 80's with his son called "Marchello" that had a few minor MTV hits

Yeah, never really liked that stuff though... Also once Marchello started taking off, Peppi was out anyway... the hits are another singer...

I think he has a lot more range than either of those guys, but two people think he sounds like them, so

I knew you'd know them, Carl! How's John doing these days? What does he do for a living? He was my guitar hero before EVH...

These days I'm friendly with him on FB. He seems to be doing well. I believe he has or runs a rehearsal studio on LI.
Back in the 80's he worked in a local music store I frequented all the time. I remember him picking guitars off the wall and blowing me away. Loved to talk gear.
John also played a few times with a hero of mine, Tommy Bolin.

I can't believe he didn't find another band to break through with. Such a great guitarist - love the jazzy side of his playing...

Great stuff Steve, thanks for sharing. I couldn't imagine what that was like pre VH - that guy must have been a Guitar God.
