On a scale of 1-10, how scammy does this sound?

I'm giving it a 7. There's a guy on a competing web forum, and I think we all know who it is, selling some pickups I'm interested in. They've been there for years now but 0% feedback. I think I'm gonna let this other person that may or may not have actually contacted them about the pickup have it 😆

Hi Matt,

Alright, the ream cover for you.

I just want to confirm that you saw this listing is for buyers located in the Continental US? I.e. no Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Europe, etc.

If you're good on that, i can send it to you shipped with tracking for $65 total, or you have the option to do local pickup if you happen to be located within driving distance of New Haven County, Connecticut. Let me know.

For payment and it being shipped, I take PayPal "Friends & Family". If you're doing local pickup, either cash or the same PayPal details as above.

I recommend that you not delay. I just got an inquiry about this pickup from another Gear Page member earlier today. See attached Pic.

You never use F&F period. Anyone willing to scam PP is just as willing to ghost you should there be a problem.

3% on $65 is a dealbreaker for this guy?

If you REALLY want it and it’s rare enough to justify, offer $67 normal PP.

I'd use f&f here, depending on who/what it is, and have before on the site that shall not be named, but his response seems so "generated" that I'd rather keep looking or spend $30 more to get it from a regular retailer.

Everything read sorta ok up until here. This reads like a scammy red flag.

And I’ll echo the no F&F sentiment as well. Even here, I’ll opt to pay the fee just so I have some protection in case something happens during shipment.

Just to offer a slightly different perspective. I fucking hate PP G&S. I will use if I am making a sale to a forum member but outside of that it's F&F or you can buy it through Reverb and pay a lot more.

Why do I hate it? I got burned a few years ago selling an amp to someone through G&S. I sold it to someone from a Facebook gear group and he wanted G&S. He generated the shipping label and sent it to me. I Pack it up, ship it, but then after it arrives he messages me claiming he's spent time playing it and it "has issues" but he couldn't provide any proof. He wants to send it back to me saying that it still works but the issues could be with his guitar. I tell him to file an insurance claim and that I wasn't going to refund his money until he provided some kind of evidence of the issues. He gets angry, makes threats, tells me he's getting his money back one way or the other and probably keeping the amp too. All I asked for was some kind of proof.

He then files a "item not as described" complaint with PP. I provide pictures, videos of the amp working before shipment, and screenshots of his threats. He provided them NOTHING and PP sides with him. They take the money from my account but he has to ship the amp back. A few days later the amp arrives and it's in perfect working order. I spend 45 minutes playing it and it's fine. The guy just didn't like it and wanted his money back.

I put it back up for sale in the same group. The guy blocks me and then creates a thread saying that I'm trying to sell defective gear. I lost one sale because of it, and another one almost fell through. Huge pain in the dick.

This is why 98% of my sales are F&F. I insure whatever I'm selling for the full amount and I explain that to the people that buy so they know they're covered if something goes wrong. Pirate Ship does payout on claims. It's a bit of a process but if you can provide before and after proof on the claim youre good.

Sorry for the long rant. The end.

The exact reason I sell with f&f only. I don't need the money, so I can wait for a buyer that understands its buyer honesty in today's market that you have to worry about as much as, or more, than seller honesty.

100%. I'm grateful the fucker didn't send back an empty box. I recently ended a potential sale because the buyer insisted on G&S. I was going to relent but then when I told him he would need to cover fees he told me he would only pay half and that was more than fair. Here I am saving this guy 8.5% sales tax plus additional shipping costs and he has the audacity to tell me to eat the fees.

After that I got weary of selling to him and called it off. Did I lose out on money? Yeah, but oh well. "Won't get fooled again".
