i saw a thing with tom petty complaining about his record label and how he secretly recorded an album to try and get around the contract or some shit. ive seen a million bands through the years complain about their contracts. my question is, why did you sign the contract if it was so fucking shitty?? like did you not read the thing over?? if i offer you $10 a cut to mow my lawn for the summer, and you sign the contract, dont call me an asshole when you figure out going rate is $100 a cut for a lawn my size, youre the stupid asshole for signing it :dunno:

Basically the way it works is when your band gets label interest, your contract may be for 3-4 albums. None of you wanted to get signed at 19-20 years old?? Thats how it worked back in the day at least. Underground or not

Most people get signed when they're hungry and don't rate their own potential or worth all that high because they haven't become a big deal yet, so how would they know?

Even a bad deal seems better than no deal and obscurity when rent is coming due.

I could see it mostly going something like the record company throws some money upfront like they’ve never had and shows them all the money the record company will invest to make them stars and they believe they’ll make it big and it won’t matter. Gives them the story that this is normal, the way they made X big stars, etc…and the band is probably too worried about losing the deal after all the work they put in to get to that point if they push back. But never been in the situation so just guessing.
