Go play one and make sure it is what you are looking for.

The HWs are cool for sure but they are ungodly loud IMO. Any plexi-type amp will be, but we're talking really loud and clean and mids, lots of mids, and lots of attack, lol. With an attenuator, sure. Without, I dunno man. I would say louder and cleaner than other 1959 RIs and older SLs I've played so who knows (haven't played a "real" plexi tho). I really didn't even play much louder than regular gig volumes at the HOB the other night. As much as I'd love to have a HW full stack cranked I just don't see where you'd get to do that these days.

I think this is pretty accurate. The HW was the loudest/cleanest (as in, loudest at the point of breakup)/boldest of any plexi-type amp I've ever played or owned. But realistically you're not going to be cranking any of these anywhere without some means of volume control, so....

It was funny...I traded my HW to GC. The two guys, a sales guy and the gtr mgr, wanted to plug it in to verify that it was working. I was there to get rid of it, so I just had the amp, no hotplate or anything. We took it in the little glass-enclosed room and they plugged it into a new 1960 cab with 75's in it. Had the amp dials all on noon or higher. When I cracked the guitar volume, I'm pretty sure both of them shit their pants.

Yeah Mike your 1959HW was a killer amp. Best Plexi I've heard!

speaking of GC. might keep an eye on the Blackstar stuff, seems like they're + or - of $1700 on what's supposed to be a really nice plexi. don't think they're selling all that great, so might be able to pick one way cheaper than that?

Yeah Blackstar stuff has been getting my attention. The clips are amazing. I've actually checked one out. It was pretty great and had lots of potential but I really wasn't feeling it with the crappy setup Gibson studio I was playing it with. Should head there someday with my own guitar.

yea i tried a Blackstar and didn't really get excited, but my own 93 didn't excite me either. guess i need some gain, but it does look like the Blackstar stuff is built good, and i love that darkish red tolex.
