I’m having an incredible weekend.

The modern classic is here on loan for a few days.

I’ve been comparing it to my other amps and getting my vintage classic really damn close.

I'm watching a Pete Thorn demo on YT, I've been drinking and, well ....

When I play my SLO, I try to dial it in to sound just like my SL67 or 100w Plexis. It's redundant for my tastes

What about one of these " on the cheap" or a Synergy Marshall JMP through the power amp of any Marshall you have

Got my SL68. I like my SL67 better. The SL68 arrived biased ice cold. So I corrected that. Tubes are EH and sound pretty dark to me. I'll do some rolling this week, but I'm thinking this needs to go to a home with a new for a huge, loud 100 watter. I already have a few of those and this doesn't really fill any gaps for me.

I played through a synergy once and should give it a fair shake. Its not something that crossed my mind before.

The 2 on my list would be a Bray, or Friedman Plex.

Neither have an FX loop, but I don't believe a true Plexi circuit will work with one. I'd probably get a PS-2 and use it's loop.

What kind of differences did you find between the two?

The SL67 is brighter and clearer. The SL68 almost sounds like there's a blanket over the speakers. It's really big sounding, that's for sure. But the SL67 lacks nothing and it just grabs me more. I would definitely need a pedal with the SL68 to get the kind of gain I see in the YT videos.

I built a couple of plexi type builds.

A JTM45/100 and a 1987/2204

Here is the second one in 1987 mode with my Hendrix/Trower pedalboard:

Probably more vintage sounding than you are looking for, but I love these type tones too as much as I like the brutalz...

Just to close the loop on the thread.
I did have a chance to mess with a 1987x again. There is a high end and that weird distortion that I liked. But I cant do the volume. Ps100 does great but I hate using it all day every day.

The evil joe was a good contender if I threw an ecc 832 tube in v2. Plexi mode got louder and edgier. Lead mode wasnt as aggressive though.
The Alta i think was supposed to be Jason's british museum. Ej is his higher gain thing. Its lacking some high end (most of it harsh but) which is great for the metal I like to play. But I guess what I consider more prototypical plexi.

Ems dr z is my fix. I threw a mr scary in there just barely (not a whole lot of room). Its doing the trick. It fixes some of the imperfections id associate with plexi. But keeps more high end. Can make gain get a little weird. Designed to do this thing. And takes a ts based pedal on top like a champ.

If I come across an mv version or a fancier older model ill give it a shot. But I also decided I have too much stuff and need to unload before anything new. Which im not ready to do today.

Not surprising. Many who say they want a plexi, don’t really want a plexi. This isn’t a slam at all. Just the reality of people romanticize an older amp but it’s not really an amp that in person they will like. Partly to blame is so many amp makers over the years have said their amp does plexi or is plexi like with a certain setting or they lawd the plexi heritage even though they’ve made an amp that is so far removed from the Og it’s meaningless.

Look into the Morris UK 67 and 68. Great effects loop. It isn't a "true Plexi circuit", but rather working to capture that thing in a Master volume amp.
