I didn't think it sounded that great through Pete's demo but really liked the sound in the room with Dave Friedman. The Rebel yell isolated guitar tone is an awesome tone. Not that gainy but just right. Love the sound of that. Many variables though, everyone has a way to dial in an amp.
I agree. That cabinet Dave was using sounded killer.
Cabinets and speakers are where it's at man...totally agree.

If I'm understanding that video I posted then it explains something about the high gain channel tones when Pete played through it. The Normal channel volume control has a 0.0047uF bright cap that is not switchable so that could explain the bright, high-harmonic nature of the tone. TBH it's too bright for me but cool nonetheless and he sure made it work.

Yeah and Pete even mentioned that he was digging it with more presence on there to bring some different sounds out. I'm curious what pickup he was using in that guitar. He may have mentioned and I just missed it.

Motor City 2nd Degree BB

Oh shit, I'm a huge dumbass. That is what I have in my Les Paul Classic. LOL!! So much for knowing my tone.....Haha!

This is an awesome video! You can hear the squish in that tone, you know it feels awesome to play but still sounds articulate as hell. Great, great video!

THAT was a GREAT video ! Thanks to the OP for posting and for those "in the know" (you know who you are) for the commentary about the actual circuits and parts etc...keep this thread going at all costs !!!

Well said. This thread is a great example of why I've been here for 8+ yrs. Such great info, and hearing the stories these pros tell is priceless.

THANKS for posting this cool video! So nice to watch something where everybody involved is SO good at what they do.

Such a great video. And Pete did such a great job. I believe he used to post here.

For you Vai fans, you may like this interview with him. It is pretty in depth regarding his technique, his early years, and how he approaches it. Here is a neat snippet too:

"The important thing I'd say is to not be wooed into thinking that you need to do something in order to fit in. That will always be destructive because it won't be authentic. Finding what you do fit into that feels natural, comfortable, organic, free to you is the payoff."

He posted quite often until some people here began giving him some crap. He’s very active still on TGP however. We’ve lost many of the core pro players that used to post here. Andy Wood was another.

It's great to go back... Enjoyed the video a lot, but that tone is a ratty 1 trick pony at best.. LOL It's not harmonics.. It's BUZZ....

Marks, Soldano, Recto, 5150 all came along to extinguish that buzzy stomp box tone into the grave..

And then there was the DELIVERANCE.. LOL

JUST TRYIN' TO MAKE FRIENDS.. LOL

To be clear, I agree with some of the posters here who feel the tone IS kind of ratty, but it's great to finally KNOW what was actually done to the amp...and I don't think anyone can argue with the tones Vai got from it (but again, I don't care for what Pete is getting from it). It would be way more interesting to sit in the room with the amp and play it, set it how YOU want it, and FEEL it before ultimately "passing judgement" on it. Don't forget, Vai never gave up the Boss SD-1 on his board even with the Jose and Lee Jackson amps, so there's that little tidbit too. I'd bet the Jose was set just dirty enough for rhythm and like so many of us, the SD-1 got the nod for solo boost chores.

Watching it again for a second time I notice a few things:

-Overall such a great video, as mentioned. Big time hats off to Pete.

-The little history lesson with Dave is just amazing. Especially would be good for anyone new to this that wants get rooted in the basics (of modding Marshalls).

-As some of you have said, some of the tones Pete was getting was somewhat grating and fatiguing but those amps can get that way and I'm assuming that was just in room with no sound production and the volume and treble and presence cranked?

-So cool that Steve Vai did an interview with Pete to accommodate this. Full package.

-Interesting that he didn't really get into Marshalls until Eat Em And Smile.

-Funny comment Steve made about looking at amp stacks in magazines as if it was porn. We can relate to that.

-Funny comment Steve made about all the power amps and cabs on stage and that he could hit 1 note and if you were not wearing protection you could lose your ability to have kids.

-Wondering why at the 47: mark he starts to tell the story about the amp being stolen and he starts by saying 5 guitars got stolen....and it cuts to the amp being stolen. Probably just Pete cutting things down to shorten story?

Super cool nonetheless. You don't even have to like Steve, Pete or Friedman to appreciate how good this is.

Yep, I agree. There are a lot of variables there like pickups and amp settings but we all also know that in a mix, it would fit right in with the bass, especially one like Sheehan.

Yeah, it is a shame. Unfortunately, one of the things that makes this forum great, light moderation, means that trolls and shit talking can run amok.

On the other hand, if you’ve a mind to look beyond the surface there is much to be said for leaving free speech to create the status quo.
The heavy moderation on TGP is biased towards some industry contributors and there will be few members who have not had a shot across their bows for mildly critical comment.
Look at the balance of posts and draw your own conclusions.

Most of the geeks over at TGP have xx,xxx amounts of posts. That's dedication to being on fucking line.
