Sure we have, as man has done from the beginning (well, maybe not the guitar straps) but we didn’t used to do it on an industrial level to facilitate material whims and wants as opposed to needs. We used to harvest animals for our basic needs and it was only to take enough for those basic needs.
Now we have massive installations with 1000’s of animals for all kids of products that are superfluous to our life. In quantities we’ll never utilize. But because we spread like a virus, a virus that likes choice and selection, we vastly outstrip the available resources ability to replenish. I rarely eat red meat anymore and would gladly pay a lot more and eat meat less often, if it guaranteed more natural conditions for animals.
Nature can’t keep up with us which is why we genetically modify everything out of its natural state to work for us. Why we spray and spread poison on that genetically altered food that ends up in table water and the ecosystem in general. Europe won’t accept our agriculture because of the Frankenstein shit we do to it, not because they’re trying economically to have the upper hand.
For decades we’ve fucked with animals with steroids, antibiotics and hormones. Messed with their day/night cycle so they’d produce more often. We’re paying the price anyway for all the health issues we have but just another hiccup in the road to growth at all costs. Must always make more profit.
We also used to think righteously about having slaves because we believed we were above black people. They weren’t as human as we were.
But hey, they were also getting free room and board and medical.
