PSA: Winged C SED Price Increase !!

I was out last night and when I checked my Droid, I saw a few new orders....

Mike Fortin emailed me and then called to make sure it was ok to post this thread. I will keep the price as is until I order more which will be next week (I wish I ordered more last week...). I only have a few EL34's left now and I have limited supplies of the 6550's and KT88's (mainly just pairs). I do have a few more quads of 6L6's in stock.

SED's are my favorite these days so this price increase sucks. I have a lot of guys who swear by Ruby and that is all they order. I did not like the Tung Sol's at all when I tried them but I may give them another shot (depending on the price). I also need to give the Svet's another shot. I have plenty of those in stock.

I think the Ruby BHT's are supposed to be good for a little higher plate/screen voltage, like the SED's. Not sure tone wise the difference in that and BSTR's. Most everything coming from them seems to be quality stuff. They seem to lack some bottom end on the SED's though.

I had some Svet's that I tried in the Cameron and thought they lacked some bottom end as compared to the SED's.

The Tung Sols I was slow to check out. But, their preamp tubes definitely are good for thickening up the sauce and getting rid of some of the Chinese fizz. The 34's I ran in one of my Friedman's was excellent. Not sure their reaction in a Bogner though. If you could sell the TS's, I would be pleased (and some Sovtek LPS)!

At this rate, we'll all have an Axe FX before long

So now they will cost $140 a quad? I see them usually sell for $118 or so for a quad.

Dave, it looks like they are going up to $180 per quad for Winged C EL34s for consumers.

I hope they don't increase the price of SED's here in the UK.... We already pay £92 for a quad here (approx $145 USD).

They will be sorry to say as the price increase is coming directly from SED in Russia. So scrap up any cash you have now and buy them up at the lower price now.

I just tried to order from Valvequeen, and it keeps showing 18 tubes at $531...I hit continue and got it down to a quad, then it asked me for a user name/password?

Yes, but it is just for a shipping address record. I just ordered 2 more quads myself.

FYI....Doug's, Tube Depot and Tube Store have all jacked theirs up, especially Tube Depot. Went from $59 a pair to $89 overnight almost. I was just on there the other day getting some Tung Sol and Sovtek LPS preamp tubes. So, its been within the last couple days.

I just went to Dougs tubes...$118 for a quad of winged c's. No price raise yet.

So what is the new price? $160 a quad? I may switch to the new Tung sol's. They sound nice

$180 a quad is what they will be going for street price for end users. Like I said, I just got this info yesterday.

Thanks for the heads-up, just ordered a quad from my favorit tube shop in Europe. I also got a quad of Tung-Sol EL34s to test. I already have the SEDs in my old 50watters and these are going in my power amp.

How are you guys biasing them? I seem to remember reading they like to be run a bit hotter than JJs and other brands.

I bought a pair from Laura the other day. Quick question, are these burned in or do I need to watch the bias over the next few weeks? I am assuming that you have tested these pretty well too?

Saw that too. My JJ 34L's have been in my Plexi build for a few years and are great. I ordered up a quad of the Winged C. Always wanted to try them.

What V1 non NOS tubes have you guys been liking for a plexi 1959 circuit. I used the JJ 803 in a 2203 with good results. I read the tungsol is quite dark. How about the Shuguang? chinese ax7's?

Yes, they are burned in. I test them on my Amplitrex AT1000, I rate them using a Maxi-Matcher and then match and burn power tubes in on my Rocca testers (where I also watch for drifting...).

So Steve, the question is if we start a rumor that SED's suck will it eventually cause them to lower production further raising the price? Or... on the other hand if we make them the most sought after tube will the more prevalent use cause production to go up and costs to go down due to volume, or possibly they will just realize people are willing to pay anything and then they jack up the price further?

Possibly in the long run, but for the short term there will be over stock and maybe they will lower prices
