Hey guys

I've been doing some reamp testing for an upcoming project.
Thought I'd share the results as it may help someone out there.

Keen for your thoughts on what you like!

Flipped through them a few times.
Good recording.
It’s amazing how similar these different rigs can be dialed in.
They all have something unique and good to offer.
At first I was leaning toward the 5150, which sounds killer BTW, then I turned it up loud.
Now the difference is more apparent.
VH4 all the way. Easiest on the ears and still exciting.

Now don’t make me look like a fanboy and tell me you mixed them up ..
:D

I favored the tripple rec. Vh4 would be a close second.

The 5150 was a little underwhelming to be honest.

Music sounds great. Nice work!

There wasn’t a stinker in the bunch. I kind of liked the slightly less bottom heavy sound of the JMP1. Had a good balance. It struck me as a good tone to leave room for the bass guitar.

Just to give further feedback I just listened with my monitors and reallllllly dig the triple rec and liked the JMP better than I remember with the monitors. For some reason I am still not gelling with the 5150.

they all sound really similar to me but id take the vh4. the recto seems to be lacking some nuts

Listening back again through different speakers.
I really like the chewing fat mids of the JMP-1 rig.
The VH4 is similar but drier sounding.
JMP-1 has something special in those mids. Fat and aggressive.

How did you record the rigs? Multiple takes? What cab?

Thanks mate!
As a long time 5150 lover I'm suprised it didn't show as well in these clips too to be honest.
I may have dialed in the low end a little too much so that might be hurting its ability to sit in the mix.

I actually think the JMP1 probably cuts through the mix the easiest out of all these.
I guess that's exactly what Marshalls are known for hey

Cheers again! The triple rec has a nice rawness to it. Some people like that and others like the more 'polished' sound that the VH4 brings.
The JMP1 seems to be the sleeping giant in these clips.
I didn't expect it to hold up to these 3 monster heads the way it has

Thanks for checking these out.
I would've liked to have boosted the recto too and try that.
Still sounds very good but it's missing some 'bite' that I tend to like.

Thanks a lot for all your feedback mate!
I didn't do anything funny with the clips haha   They're all named correctly.

The JMP1 may actually be a little more aggressive than the VH4 because of that mid and high end, something I really didn't expect!

The VH4 and JMP1 are the 2 I'm liking out of this test. Hard to pick one really!

I recorded using a Radial J48 DI. Split the signal so that the Thru ran to an amp for monitoring purposes and the other line recorded the dry DI signal straight into my DAW direct from the guitar.

Just recorded 1 take left and then recorded another take right.

Then sent the left DI track out of my interface into a Radial JCR Studio Reamper.
The Out of the Reamp box then fed to the input of the amp.
Then the amp's speaker out was sent to my Torpedo Live which then sent the signal back to the DAW (and recorded as a fresh new track).

The torpedo live is running an Ownhammer IR which is an old Marshall 4x12 with early nineties V30 speakers with an SM57 mic.

Then repeat the process for the DI track that was recorded to the right side.

I would've preferred a tiny bit more gain dialed in. The palm-mutes sounded kinda dry.

Either way, I preferred the 5150. :)

Here is how I rank them:

JMP1
VH4
5150
Recto

I really didn't like the recto at all. Sounds kinda weak compared to the others.

Nice work!!!

I also liked the JMP1 the most, but I like a bright and more in-your-face tone. I liked the Recto the least. It very much sounded like an unboosted Recto: huge footprint but a more distant sound and just not very "forward." Toss up between the VH4 and the 5150 for me. That recording sounded like what I'd expect from a 5150 but I wouldn't have guessed that was a VH4, though I can't put my finger on why.

Thanks for checking these out, good feedback on the gain, I should have a play with trying a little more gain to see how that turns out

I'm a shocked how well the JMP1 is doing here, I really like that sound too and didn't expect it to hang as well with the others.
The recto is unboosted so i'm guessing this is why most guys like to boost them for heavier tones

Thank you! :)

The JMP1 still carries that high mid, bitey Marshall tone doesn't it.

You nailed it, recto is unboosted.

I think a lot of people think the VH4 is this aggressive beast, it really isn't.
It's smooth and dry and almost has a 'sweet' sound to me.
Like it's a little aggressive but nice at the same time, hard to describe.

Yeah, I've had a few VH4s and 2007+ were very aggressive, biting amps. Is yours older? I had one from '98 that was a bit different. It still had a ton of presence but was not as tight so seemed darker and not as angry. Definitely a "sweeter" sound. Still a killer, killer amp though.

I like all.
Since I have a vh4 and 6505, too, could you share your settings?

5150 master volume on 6 in the pic? Isn't that insane?

All so similiar....that said I'd go >

JMP-1
5150
VH4
Triple

All very similar to me, but the JMP-1 appealed the most as it sounded a bit more open than the others.

If it is, it's nuts. Lol. My old block letter would be deafening with the master there and the pregain at four with a boost out front.
