Reamp Testing Clips: 5150 VH4 JMP1 Recto

On my work headphones they sound similar as hell. But I think for me from favorite to least is VH4, JMP1, Recto and 5150 last.

I also liked the JMP1 the most, but I like a bright and more in-your-face tone. I liked the Recto the least. It very much sounded like an unboosted Recto: huge footprint but a more distant sound and just not very "forward." Toss up between the VH4 and the 5150 for me. That recording sounded like what I'd expect from a 5150 but I wouldn't have guessed that was a VH4, though I can't put my finger on why.

The JMP1 still carries that high mid, bitey Marshall tone doesn't it.

You nailed it, recto is unboosted.

I think a lot of people think the VH4 is this aggressive beast, it really isn't.
It's smooth and dry and almost has a 'sweet' sound to me.
Like it's a little aggressive but nice at the same time, hard to describe.

Yeah, I've had a few VH4s and 2007+ were very aggressive, biting amps. Is yours older? I had one from '98 that was a bit different. It still had a ton of presence but was not as tight so seemed darker and not as angry. Definitely a "sweeter" sound. Still a killer, killer amp though.

My VH4 is a 2012. I'm going to try dialing down the low end a little to see if that brings out some more bite, will post my round 2 results here

All very similar to me, but the JMP-1 appealed the most as it sounded a bit more open than the others.

Here's take 2 of 5150 and VH4.

5150 has a little more gain dialed in and some low end reduced.
VH4 has a little more gain, a little more top end and slightly reduced bottom end.

Feels like these 2 clips sound better than the first ones I posted.

I really didn't like the recto at all. Sounds kinda weak compared to the others.

Same order for me, even with the second takes! It was the low end that did it for me, the JMP seemed like it was sitting best in the mix without being too boomy. Listening on headphones rather than monitors if that means anything! Cheers!

As others have said, it's amazing how similar these all are. At low laptop volume, the 5150 and the VH4 sound nearly identical. It wasn't until the JMP that I thought, he did actually upload something else. Personally, I thought the Marshall sounded the best. The 5150 has something in the lower mids that is fuzzy, it sounds like it's breaking up, yet still tight somehow. You could run a parametric on it and dial it out, it's nasty.

The VH4 had something similar in the low mids that on my little speakers, doesn't sound good. It's a fuzz that is distracting.

The JMP doesn't have this, it's tighter, yet still has some low end girth. I would certainly use this heavily in the mix as it will sit well.

The same for the DR, surprisingly not flubby and not buzzy. I like this one too.

In summary, nice work on the recordings and throwing these up.

I will add, mix with your ears, not with your eyes. Reading your post, you really WANT to use the 5150 and VH4, but they aren't the best in this case.

I think take two of the 5150 was better. Still my least favorite. I agree with ? that there is an odd undesirable fuzz in there that is a hindrance. Maybe run the post gain lower on the 5150?

I know that I am the only one but I like the rectumfrier a lot.

I have to say that I have not listened to the clips thru studio monitors yet, but I think the 5150 and the vh4 sound too similar.

I recorded my vh4 and my deliverance yesterday and they sound so different thru the same cab when listening thru real monitors.
The 6505 is in the basement but I know from the past that it sounded quite different from the vh4 recorded and live.

I'm wondering whether the cab sim does play a role here. Or maybe the drums bury the differences. I am not so sure.

I agree that this 5150 is not tight in the bass, my 6505 seems a bit tighter.

There wasn’t a stinker in the bunch. I kind of liked the slightly less bottom heavy sound of the JMP1. Had a good balance. It struck me as a good tone to leave room for the bass guitar.

Yep, JMP was second for me and could just as well have been first but there's a little something in the low mids I liked better in the VH4. I don't mind big bottom on guitars for certain styles but think it needs to be a little more focused than what's in these clips because as you inferred, it's going to walk all over the bass (and drums).

gahhhhhh, opened up the take 2 tracks this morning and noticed they had an eq plugin on them with a top end boost for some stupid reason.

I'm focused on the VH4 and 5150 for this back half purely because I think I can get more out of these amps.
Feel like there's more potential to find there.

Clips have been fixed now so would be keen to know if you still go Marshall #1

I think you're onto something where the amp differences are less when in a full mix.

reamping also makes it harder to find a difference because the performance is the exact same too.

I fixed my plug in issue (by turning it off!!) so hopefully that helps show the difference a little more now.
