I would love to have experienced what either one of them have musically.

Tony Iommi also has a fast, nervous vibrato. By most of the posters criteria, we should discount his other abilities and contributions to music as well. :loco:

Most of the Hammett haters couldn't RIFF their way out of a paper bag.

Iommi's missing 2 fingertips. What's Kirk's excuse?

Eddie's probly getting royalties for many products.
I read about the New EVH toothpaste coming out.....it plays Eruption when you squeeze it on the toothbrush.

I remember Sammy on Howard Stern several years ago explaining that in an average year, the Van Halen company generate about $100 million in royalties/sales. In a year that the band tours (or has a record out), they make much more.

Throw in Eddie's equipment endorsements, and I would think it's a safe bet, he's raking in the money.

He may have a point to an extent, but this really comes across as a statement of jealousy more than anything else.

As far as Kirks solos not being top notch.... sometimes your solos are only as good as what you're playing over :) Sounding consistently creative over E and minor progressions is going to be difficult as the years go on, ya know? (yes, I'm exaggerating, but you get the point).

Lots of the players that are considered "greats" get to stretch their musical legs quite a bit. Being in a band whos roots are in thrash probably puts some constraints on that.

Eh. They can both play circles around me while half asleep and handcuffed, and they've both made more money than I ever will at music.

What about Steve Morse?... a technician of the highest level..

with a vibrato and tone as bad or worse than Hammet's?

has nothing to do with this thread of course ( oh wait...Rod Morgenstien, played in the Dregs! :D )

did any guys actually like Winger?
I don't flatly agree. Morse has some great tones, and some not so great. I wouldn't call any of his tones terrible per se.

His vibrato is an acquired taste. When it works it's one of the best, I don't personally like how he uses it all the time. I like it on most of Southern Steel. I have been annoyed with how fast it is on occasion, but I also find his vibrato hard to replicate, because it's pretty wide for how fast it is. I like it when he finishes off bends with it, but not in most of his ballads. I do think it's a choice he made, and he knows that some people don't like it. It's perfect in a tune like "Cut to the Chase" or "Simple Simon", but not so great on others.

But vibrato is a taste thing, honestly. I detest a lot of blues players vibrato techniques for being so thin and fast, and on pretty much every phrase. I re-he-hheally don't like Paul Gilbert's vibrato. To each his own. I'm sure Paul is perfectly happy with what he does.

I do think Kirk's vibrato is not good, having said all of that. I mean, his bends aren't even close to in tune.

don't bring steve morse into this
he has a fast vibrato,
hey
freddie mercury had a fast vibrato
you can have a fast vibrato and still have finesse

hammett has beginner vibrato

Everyone thinks it's cool to poke fun at KH these days and IMO he does deserve some of the crap he gets. Most of the solos he's done the past 15 years have been pretty bad/forgettable. Also, some of his live playing has been horrendous.

BUT....

The guy has wrote some of my favorite solos ever especially on MOP, AJFA and the Black album. Some of his stuff made good or average Metallica songs sound great. I don't think most guitarists could have done that for Metallica. I also don't think he's a "guitar hero" like Randy Rhodes or EVH but he was VERY important to metal and the success of his band.

Of course, Reb Beach is a better player but he's played in Winger, Dokken and Whitesnake. C'mon man.

Next thing you know the guy from Trixter will be calling out Mustaines chops. :D

So has George Lynch, Jon Sykes, Steve Vai, etc.... whats your point? Those guys can play circles around the hamster. And I would much rather listen to Dokken or Whitesnake and hear some monster playing and great songs from Lynch or Sykes than listen to another pentatonic-wah fueled apocalypse from the Hamster. Lynch,Sykes, etc had amazing vibratos. Technically better and imo way more fun to listen to.

Metallica is shit after the Black Album. Didn't Mave write the leads and rhythms' on the 1st 2 albums anyways :poke: So are you saying that you just like the way kirk played the stuff Dave wrote???

I love Breaking the Chains, In My Dreams, Still of The Night, etc. I don't care how cheesy they are or how bad the videos were, they had monster guitar playing and great tone on those songs. Don Dokken and Coverdale are amazing singers (well not so much Don anymore).

I'd rather listen to Maiden or VH than any other band from that period but thats beside the point.
And one more thing.

Iron Maiden/ Judas Preist>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Metallica

All $$$ aside, better songs, playing, singing, tone. Maiden brings it live every time, can't say the same for metallisuck...

Nope, I have disabled avatars. :)

Seriously speaking, Whitesnake has few nice songs but that's it for me. I tried to like Dokken but I just can't stand their music these days.

Early Vai and Sykes era Whitesnake I enjoy. Lightning Strikes Again (Newest Dokken LP) was good, not great. Lynch era Dokken is awesome imo. Those first 3-4 albums (Breaking the chains, tooth and nail, back for the attack, under lock and key) have such great playing and tones on them. To each their own. Who am I to judge? As long as your not listening to rap or "popular music" today your fine by me

Like I said earlier......."My Guitar player can beat up yours!!"

I laugh at this thread and how damn silly it is.
LIke someone mentioned earlier....
I dont think Kirk or Reb lost a wink of sleep over the bitch comments they have threw at each other thru the years.
I really dont. ;)
We all seem to care about it more then the rest. But hey....it makes for good reading! :checkthisout:

it was...until Cobain came along
at the time the awards were:

best vibrato: John Sykes
Fastest picker : michaelangelo
fastest sweeper: Jason Becker
best Yngwie impersonation: michael romeo
Hottest guitarist: CHUBTONE

well my last post didnt make it for some reason,...so this will be my last post.

when 99% of the so called guitarists here at rig-talk,..think one guitarist is "better" than another because why?..they can play sweep picking!!!!!....or there more technicaly proficient!!!!!,....or,..there vibrator isnt nervous???....oh and can play scales faster!!!!....lol,......i think you've missed the point of what a musician is,.....i would rather hear one well timed blue note,..than a million scales and tap ons at super fast speed,...i cant believe i even have to say this,.....

mods,..please ban me,...i never want to be on this forum again,...good bye 80's loving, scale loving, musician hating, rig talk
