Reb Beach rips on Hammett

I'm sure Kirk really cares. "Oh please, guitarist from a borderline irrelevant B Grade hair band, don't hate on me. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to drive my 24k gold helicopter downtown, purchase the rights to your entire catalog, and have it destroyed to erase the shred of a memory that most people have left of you..."

I'm not knocking Reb, but it's completely tasteless to badmouth a fellow guitarist. It just makes Reb look that much more butthurt that Kirk is getting recognition for his body of work than he is. There's a lot more to being a musician than being a technically proficient guitarist, and Kirk has more widespread influence than Reb ever will have. There's more guitarists that will pick up a guitar now and be inspired by Metallica and Kirk now and 20+ years from now than ever will be for Reb. Most young guys picking up a guitar these days have never even heard of Reb, but I bet they all dicked around with the main riff to Enter Sandman or learn some Kirk solos along the way.

It's like Hendrix, the man could be the sloppiest live player you've ever heard and he wasn't the most technically proficient, even for his era...but you can't deny his appeal and the inspiration he gave that made countless guitarists we love these days pick up a guitar to begin with.
  , Agreed

Everyone thinks it's cool to poke fun at KH these days and IMO he does deserve some of the crap he gets. Most of the solos he's done the past 15 years have been pretty bad/forgettable. Also, some of his live playing has been horrendous.

BUT....

The guy has wrote some of my favorite solos ever especially on MOP, AJFA and the Black album. Some of his stuff made good or average Metallica songs sound great. I don't think most guitarists could have done that for Metallica. I also don't think he's a "guitar hero" like Randy Rhodes or EVH but he was VERY important to metal and the success of his band.

Of course, Reb Beach is a better player but he's played in Winger, Dokken and Whitesnake. C'mon man.

Next thing you know the guy from Trixter will be calling out Mustaines chops. :D

I don't think I've yet to hear of a guitarist that said...

"Dude, when I heard Winger's self-titled album, and that breakdown is over and they start screaming (*in really high pitched voice*) She's only Seventeeeeeeeeeeen...I just KNEW I had to be a guitarist and that's what I wanted to do with my life, no doubt about it. Those guys are the reason I play guitar today..." :D

But, even way after their prime, and after all the Napster controversy, and even the lame exscuse for an album known as "St. Anger"...there's still people that will hear an album like "Master of Puppets" - nearly 25 years after it's release - and want to pick up a guitar because of it and learn some Kirk solos along the way. Say what you want about Kirk - and I agree I hate his vibrato and there's a million more technically proficient players out there - but in another 20 years, Reb will be nothing more a fleeting memory on the minds of 50 year old guitarists where as teenagers in 2030 will still be hearing "Master of Puppets" for the first time and picking up a guitar because of it.

Hay guys if the guitarist who made the most money was the greatest then that guy who played the solo for beat it would be the....oh wait.

I wonder what is the biggest source of income for the rock stars? Tours, album sales? We all probably think Eddie has more money than God but i bet there's plenty of rock players who have made more than him. I know the guys in AC/DC have more money than some 3rd world Countries and playing for Bon Jovi probably made Ritchie some coin. I believe Bon Jovi has sold more albums than VH.

No doubt Ed has made some stupid coin but he is not in The Edge's same area code when it comes to bank...of course he does not live like Ed either. Bon Jovi I have read is stupid rich as well.

Black Album = Elevator metal   You can clap your hands and just get down to Enter Sandman

I guess we should be praising Trent Dilfer as one of the greats due to winning the superbowl as well

Even though some of what he says i true, I'd take Kirk's career anyday rather than be in one of the biggest jokes of a band of all all time :dunno: I just don't think the guy has room to talk being a good guitar player in a band that's basically the 80's backstreet boys of metal. I don't think Kirk always sucked, I just think he's just sucked for around 20 years :D

That is pretty much how I feel about it. As a kid, I was a huge fan of Kirk's playing on MoP. He never played like that again, IMO. That being said, Reb is a killer player and no doubt technically better than Hammett, but Winger had a layer of cheese on it that was too thick for me back in the day.

You gotta remember that this forum's full of spandex loving guitarists from the 80s. Kirk's writing credits are sick...

baaahahahahahahaaaa!!.....

IMHO Edge is a pretty solid guitar player. Completely different from the guys we're talking about, but he has good sense about it.

At least 80's guitarists in spandex could play their guitars in key and had vibrato that didn't sound like a nervous 8 year old who wets his pants.

"Metallica planning 2011 tour 'to rival Pink Floyd's 'The Wall''

Tour 'will blow your mind' according to band manager

Metallica are planning a tour in 2011 which their manager claims will rival Pink Floyd's 1980-1981 'The Wall' tour, it has been revealed.

Manager Peter Mensch revealed that the band are currently working on ideas for the tour, which will see then play in 10 cities worldwide. No dates have been announced yet.

"Let's just say that next year you will see a Metallica tour that will blow your mind," he told Classic Rock. "They will only play in 10 cities but it will be a huge undertaking. It will be Metallica's equivalent of 'The Wall'."

When asked to define his role as the band's manager, Mensch said it involved, "Saying something like, 'I have this idea for us to play an equivalent of 'The Wall'. So here's some ideas so we can get the professionals in so they can tell me if I'm crazy or not.'"

160 people were recently arrested outside a Metallica gig in Bogata, Columbia during a riot as ticketless fans stormed venue barriers. "

I wonder who well play in the surrogate band ?

What about Steve Morse?... a technician of the highest level..

with a vibrato and tone as bad or worse than Hammet's?

has nothing to do with this thread of course ( oh wait...Rod Morgenstien, played in the Dregs! :D )

did any guys actually like Winger?

My hat is off to them, they can sell anything to their fans.

That Monty dude went broke following them around and lost his room and board he was such a freak fan.

Thats all fine and Dandy.........but does he know the Cameron secret handshake?
thats what you have to stop and ask yourself.

I dont think what Reb Beach said is any big deal... it's pretty much how everybody talks of Hammet here! he just plays bigger casinos, slightly nicer dive bars and gets better time slots at rib fests and county fairs...

With Steve Morse being the perfectionist that he is, you have to think that his vibrato sounds like that on purpose, for whatever reason. Tone is always subjective but since Steve's tone is nothing like Kirk's since they play different music is it worth even bringing Morse up?

so you agree his vibrato sounds nervous- skiddish and slightly out of tune!

I agree this has no place in this thread but I was just raising a silly question...Morse's vibrato is cringe worthy at times, much like Kirk Hammets!

actually I feel like an ass for critiquing any pro level player, both much better than myself
So...................The Edge >>>>> Kirk since it is said the edge is worth over a half billion dollars.

way better! More original, better sounding, and a more creative! One of the best IMHO!

I liked Winger back in the 80's.
They were no different then any other cheesy hair band out there.
Just that they got busted on Beavis and Butthead!

No, Morse's vibrato doesn't sound skidish to me, or nervous. It's almost as if he's bending the strings too much. It never sounds like he's on the edge of disaster or he doesn't have control like how Kirk sounds.

Listen to Kirk live, he fucks up all the time. Bonafide mistakes in his playing. How many times did you ever hear Morse make a mistake? Never. And he's playing things are a billion times harder than what Kirk is playing.
