Ive tried several tube screamer variants with my Quickrod. The Spalwn has such a unique (Weird/Haunting..lol) mid push already, that I couldnt settle on one that didnt interfere with the natural tone of the amp. And quite frankly I dont really see any need to tighten up a Splawn. The amp is already ridiculously tight as is.
That being said, what I did try was a compressor for leads. I left my rhythm chunk alone, and kicked in the compressor for smooth singing leads. It was nice! My 2 cents :)

A recently bought a Boss CS3 compressor and I used that with my QR for the last two gigs I did. The first gig, the sound guy said some of my leads were dropping, which was strange since I had the solo level up. I basically set up the compressor for the clean sound, and didn't test it for solos. I adjusted it and bought the level up and that took care of it. I've been playing for 30 years and I've never actually owned a compressor pedal until now which is strange. I still need to dial it it a little more, and I think I'm going to be happy with it when I do. I do have a Boss SD1 on my board that I kick on once in a while, but I mostly don't need it with the QR.
The guy that just posted the Nitro vid of "I'm The One" mentioned he was running a compressor as well. Like you, I have never used one before and had no idea what they are for. I wonder if I should give one a shot as well.

I am still really an effects noob.

I use the Maxon OD808 in front of my Street Rod and it works great!

I've tried ALOT of boosts with my Splawn Nitro...nothing beats a tubescreamer circuit (whether it's an original or a copy).

Yeah I am really excited for my VFE Ice Scream. Hopefully they are shipping this week. I got on the preorder and saved $30.

Compressors can be fun with gain. They'll add sustain, saturation and push the amp increasing gain. They'll also even out picking dynamics so if you're playing a repeating chugging riff your attack will sound closer to the same each time you strike the strings. Same goes for fast picked lead runs it will even out the dynamics.

Not saying buy this compressor but the video shows how a compressor will change an amp set up with a bit of gain. Most compressor videos are done on clean amps since that's the typical use but they certainly work with gain too as shown near the end of the vid.

get an used Maxon od808 and an used BB Preamp

I'm the kind of guy who thinks there's no "perfect" boost
they're all different and will react to different guitars / pickups / speakers etc.

I prefer having 2 or 3 boost to choose from .
My picks are a Fulltone OCD v4 , BB Preamp and a Maxon od808

get them all or get none.
that's my 2 cents

There are good ones out there...currently use the Jcoloccia Horus...love it...I've owned 2 BB preamps, and both were kinda noisey. Sound good, but hum like hell. The tonefreak pedals are damn good. Buddy owns a Cmat super signa drive....bassy pedal to my ears.

I've also owned The OCD v.4 and v.3. Liked the 3 better. 4 was more clear, 3 had more drive and sustain. He'll, the maxon OD9 is a good pedal, and true bypass.

That Horus sounds awesome! Just checked out the Pete Thorn vid on their site.

I use the Ibanez reissue ts808, and a Maxon OD9. I can't really tell much difference between the two.

Anyone compared the maxon 808 vs. maxon OD9? How about maxon 808 vs Ibanez ts808 reissue.

I really want to try the OD808X as well. That, maybe also the Koko

Huge difference IMO and the winner was clearly Maxon 808.

I felt bad because my wife bought my the Ibanez TS808 brand new for Christmas one year. The price tag is a little rediculous compared to the Maxon but I had to do it.

For metal at least, the Maxon killed it. They are both going to color your tone but for my application at the time (VHT 100cl, V30 x 75 Cab, Ibanez S540 with ToneZone) it was no contest. The Maxon just sounded better for high gain tones and everyone in the room agreed, even my drummer.

Have you ever tried the 808X?
