I have a friend who is afraid of high end freq's and treble. I've always found his tone to be flat and lackluster. :dunno:
(until I have a go at his amp's eq's)

I know what you mean, I tried dialing out the treble and presence and needed them at least at 9 or 10 o'clock for things to sound nice and juicy.

Note: Last night, with the treble and presence all the way down and mids high... still had plenty of ice pick...

I REALLY had this problem with a Marshall power amp for a while. I couldn't dial out the icepick even with the treble and presence on zero.

The problem = Sovtek 5881's. I tried some JJ 6L6's, and it turned to gold. perfect. Icepick GONE.

Your amp is probably biased coldly too.

v30s in recto cabs really suck if you ask me, I changed out 2 of mine for GT75's and the sound is much better. I think honestly it is easier to balance the treble with GT75s than with v30s. With the 30s you never seem to get the balance between good tone and something that isnt piercing your ears. Probably because they have such a dark character. So with the GT75s you can actually increase the mids and dial the treble back and have something that resembles a nice tone. Yeah I sold my Recto years ago and with my Marshall JMP I never have ice picky tone. I still use the same v30/G75T recto cab though.

I have been extra happy with my rig. Recto rack madness. Recording Pre and 2:100. Until... tonight, I put my ear down by the speakers to hear what a mic would "hear" and I felt like the sound was a bit "ice picky" kinda harsh... kinda shrill. I love the way it sounds a few feet away...

Any suggestions to dial away the ice pick or mic placement tips not to pick up those frequencies..?

Maybe if I use the EQ in my G Major... that would help?

What do you say Rig-Talk?

Get some Beam Blockers and you may want to try running direct to the board with a Palmer PDI09. I used this combo with my Recto Pre/2:100/Recto 4x12's. I loved the tone I was getting.

If you want to experiment a bit, try cutting 2 strips of duct tap about 5 inches long and put them in front on each speaker on the grill this will give a little idea of what the Beam Blockers do. The BB's do it much better than duct tape but it will give you an example of the effect.

Thanks Mark.

By direct, you mean using the recording outputs from the pre and "live" at the same time? Or just for recording? Can you elaborate a little?

I'll try the beam blocker thing too.

Direct by using the Palmer PDI09 between your amp and speaker cabs then mic cable from the PDI09 to the FOH (mixer)

The ice pick is in the mids. Trust me. Gigged with mine for years. That's why Mesa recommends lower mid settings. I Always ran mine like this:

Vintage mode (Modern mode is way to brash. I used vintage on Channel 2 & 3) (3 had a little higher gain setting for leads)
Bold/Tube recto
*I bypassed the loop and used the channel masters
Gain: 12:30 - 1:00
Presence: 10:30 - 11:00
Treb: 12:30 - 1:00
Mid: 11:00
Bass: 10:00

Speakers make up a huge amount of your tone, I suggest changing those before any tubes. Seriously. Next comes guitar/pickups. THEN tubes.

Something that helped my single recto get really a nice overall tone was changing out the V1 for a good 12at7. Yes, it dials back the gain a bit, but the entire gain structure becomes smoother and easier to control. It seemed to help with overall tone as well. I also used JJ 6L6's, which are a little darker than normal.

Have you tried relocating your rig in the room it's in?
I did this last night and it smoothed out my tone and actually made everything clearer, and more balanced. Less noise too. "shrugs"

k,

i didn't even read the replys.
i'm just gunna put my two cents in before i get carried away...

My favorite thign to do with rectifier is on your modern channel aim for a slightly looser more crunchy tryp of distortion more rock rhythem wise my typical settings for this are as such..

Gain 1:00
Bass 11:00ish
Mids 3:00+
Treble 7:00(off)
Pres 8:00-11:00

my master is normally around 9:00-11:00 depending on application

this is an old 2 channel BTW

also The eq section on the recto series are rediculasly easy to mod, very simialr to a 800 with a diffrent mid structure and values

that or set everythinng to 11:00 can have someone tweak while you play...
more this less that.. etc.

you might need to lower you bridge pick up a little bit the swaky high end.

the key with them is feed them a very tight low bass signal that is rather bright and clear to begin with and use the treble and pre controls sparingly...

this also work out better with T75 speakers, for V30s you might need to ajust the bass and trble..

those are my settings for EMGs the bass and mids differ with passives
