After the recent thread about John Norum with the video of him walking through his gear, I was heartbroken. John is one of my favorite players and I just can't stand to see players of his caliber suffering. I won't discuss his rack of Les Paul's because some of you guys love those things. Personally, I feel like I'm strapped into a medieval torture device while playing one, but that is subjective.
But his amps and pedals. Oh for the love of humanity. The uninformed Mr. Norum is playing JCM800's so you might think, "well okay, he's on the right track". But no. He is playing the 2205 version of the JCM800. Those have diode clipping in them and as a result can only sound crappy. And Norum is such a sucker that when Michael Schenker got tricked into buying a 2205, he then tricked Norum into buying it from him. Talk about amp flipping. And Norum was the unfortunate recipient of that cast off from Schenker. And Norum has three of those 2205's. I'm sure all acquired through dumpster diving from stores that decided they needed smaller door stops.
And for all that is holy, the guy's pedalboard has a Dunlop Crybaby in it. Not a Teese, not a Fulltone, not a Budda, not even a Dunlop 535Q or vintage Thomas Organ era Cry Baby wah. Just a $69 Crybaby wah. And then to add insult to injury, he has a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble next to it. Just some crappy, Made In Taiwan Boss pedal. Doesn't he know you can't play that Taiwanese Boss crap? At least get a made in Japan one and send it in for a hundred dollar mod that doesn't make it sound like the pedal it's supposed to be anymore. And that's it. You call that a pedalboard? he could go into any pawn shop on the planet and grab a used Crybaby and Boss CE-5 for less than $100.
Now in all fairness, the guy has only appeared on 50 different commercial releases so he's still a little wet behind the ears and just probably hasn't had as much of a chance to read about gear as the rest of us. He needs our help. Just like Akira Takasaki that I started an intervention thread for crappy gear about a couple of weeks ago, Mr. Norum needs our help. Let's all join together and shine a light where there is none, give a clue where there is only cluelessness, and give hope to the hopeless.
Warning: This video will bring tears to the eye of even the most hardened gear expert. Please watch as much as you can before turning away in despair. And be thankful for how much we have and how much we know, but always remember those that are less fortunate than us and don't have as busy of recording or touring schedules. Thank you very much.
