Honestly, I think that with bands like Slayer, Judas Priest, Deicide, Pantera, Iced Earth....you get what you expect: fine high end metal.
Now, there are the fans who want the bands to reinvent themselves, and there are those who want the bands to keep playing the same thing for decades.
So, what to do ? You stay true to your original style yet people say you are stuck and you can't be creative.
You try something fresh and creative and the fans call you sellout. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't sort of situation.
When Megadeth took the risk and released Risk, fans didn't accept it. They wanted another Rust in Peace!
I like how Metallica slapped every little crybaby in the face by releasing Load which is a drastic day and night change in comparison to The Black Album and And justice for all. And then to draw the thick line of stubbornness they added Reload )))
I also like how Slayer released Diabolvs in Musica which is very different from Seasons in the abyss, yet it's still slayer! It's Slayer in mid tempo down tuned style!
Now, I'm always in ROFL mode when someone disses Kerry King solos. I had a big collection of Slayer unofficial live bootlegs from different eras, whether it's Touring in the abyss shows, Divine InTour'vention shows, GHUS tour or Christ Illusion shows, Kerry is the one who plays the complex psychotic intriguing solos that he laid in the record. Jeff is mostly winding up his solos or changing them almost like what Kirk Hammet used to do during the Load, Reload and St Anger era.
Now for those who are deaf or unable to track down a solo, it' ok, but for those who are really able to play guitar yet bash on Slayer and KK, I ask them to check out these songs, listen to the solos by King then maybe they can upload a video playing them ?:
-At Dawn They Sleep
-Live undead
-Dead skin mask
-Seasons in the abyss
-Killing Field
-213
-Gemini
-Cleanse the soul
Let's have fun )))
