@Scumback Speakers can you believe this? It's true...

I dismissed that speaker with disdain in the 90's, but my God if it isn't amazing.

I've got a couple of G12M-70s and a pair of G12-50s that appear to be almost the same speaker, same cone code, same everything but label as far as I can tell. I really wanted to like them when they first came out, but when I finally got some, blah. But I've revisited them from time to time and they're decent for what they are.

I think they were the precursors to the G12T75, which I'm generally not a fan of, either. The M70s seem to be brighter and thinner, but with better mids. The T75s are wider and more scooped. My tastes are more along the G12-65, but I think the M70s have more in common with Greenbacks than T75s do. Neither is in the same ballpark, not really much in common with a GB, but then again, a V30 doesn't have much in common with a GB, either.

I had a pair of those in my JCM 800 combo. Totally, tonally CRAP! And even if you did want to, there's no recone kit for them when they blow.

Never had any problems with mine. Ran a 100w at gig volume into two of them 2-3 times a week for about a year. They got replaced by G12K85 which are still in that cab.

The dude that wrote the History of Marshall book even craps on the m70s
IKR?! Awful things! But yet here we are!

The secret to one of the most unique and coveted clean, dirty and lead tone quests of the past 30 years laid bare for all those with eyes to see and ears to hear!

Ok Mr Scumback, what we REALLY want to know is what was less pleasing to your ear? The sound from the speaker, or having to listen to Billy Corgan sing on the album of the band in question?

I sold a 1960B with a quad of them - though I wish I just emptied the cab in hindsight. It's probably the only speaker I've had that I couldn't get sounds I liked from. My Marshalls sound better thru the Eminence Legend 15" in my Gretsch.

So, we’re now pretending that SP ever had anything even remotely approaching good guitar tone?

The difference between being a good artist, songwriter, or performer, and being a random dude in some basement with good tone. I'm sure they chose the tone/sound they did for that album or those songs because it fit the vibe they were going for at the time. Is it what I would personally want if I were writing/recording my own stuff? No. But for SP, it fits just fine.

I can agree with this. I actually think SP has great tones on Mellon Collie. I don't know if that's marshall, diezel, boogie, or what, but it sounds great - especially on Zero and the other heavier tracks

The gish/siamese dream tones are pretty much the anti-dan tones - big muff, strat, fuzzy, farty, indistinct

I have nothing but respect for Billy as a songwriter though, and I'm sure he made it sound that way for a reason

I've never been a fan of the g1270, and saying that gish and siamese dream make me less likely to be a fan of it, but I have only ever played them fleetingly before. I've never sat with them with some headphones on and really tried to make them work, so maybe they could surprise us?

Yep, that's pretty much my experience. It's amazing what a good EQ will do for your sound. The M70 was never my favorite, but I got some very usable tones out of it. Just making do with what I had at the time.

Added: I got some more in a Marshall 4104 and they couldn't come out fast enough. When I was using them, I was using a Boogie Studio with a Peavey Classic 50/50 PA that had presence and resonance controls, too. Could get a lot of different sounds out of that rig.
