I can agree with this. I actually think SP has great tones on Mellon Collie. I don't know if that's marshall, diezel, boogie, or what, but it sounds great - especially on Zero and the other heavier tracks
The gish/siamese dream tones are pretty much the anti-dan tones - big muff, strat, fuzzy, farty, indistinct
I have nothing but respect for Billy as a songwriter though, and I'm sure he made it sound that way for a reason
I've never been a fan of the g1270, and saying that gish and siamese dream make me less likely to be a fan of it, but I have only ever played them fleetingly before. I've never sat with them with some headphones on and really tried to make them work, so maybe they could surprise us?
Well, Billy wasn't going to use a Bon Jovi guitar sound in the '92 era, was he? It was expected that the new Alt stars of the day would have new sounds and new attitudes. SP were among the few new ~Alt bands that I truly appreciated, along with Alice and Soundgarden. All of them had metal roots.
I consider Gish and Siamese to be masterpieces of the era, and I really like the guitar tones, which were basically meant to be more boosted home brew as opposed to slick. Mellon Collie wasn't as consistent, but damn close considering it was a VERY indulgent double album. GREAT drumming also.
