So MILLS ACOUSTICS Is REALLY GONE HUH?

Mills Acoustics I called them 2 or 3 years ago and when I told them/him I hated v30's and wanted another type speaker I basically listened to a 30 infomercial about how v30's are the greatest speaker ever made Turned me off completely. Hung up and never called back.

They were a flavor of the month forum hype product. Ok, flavor of the 6 months. I tried them and they they sounded weird. Preferred my crappy-piece-of-shit-Marshall-couldn't-possibly-be any-good cabinets.

No, they were flavor of the year a couple years ago....but that's alright. It's the way forums go, isn't it?

Oversized cabs aren't applicable to just any amp. I found the same thing too. With the Marshall style circuits and the like, they will get flubby and sound like ass....just like a Mesa Recto cab will. If V30's are you thing and with amps like an Uberschall, Herbert, Dual Rec and those sorts, they are as good or better. Built like a brick shit house too. Having said all that, mine are in storage... without speakers in them.

That speaks volumes.


I gave both models a shot, the oversized and the regular sized. Not my bag.

the fuckers take up loads of room too. i hate to toss them, but don't think I will see a need for them. too damn expensive to ship. damn things weigh 100lb without speakers.

.....and using my beat up Marshall's and now beat up Bogner's. tough to beat that cab design. that internal volume ratio and cab dimensions I don't think were designed without some audio engineering somewhere.

I think that it is difficult for a company that only makes cabs to handle success. Look at earcandy, mills, and redstar. All three had a good bit of success, then most likely took to many orders, and word of mouth about customer service, long wait times etc, and that starts their fall. The only high end cab only company that seems to have done it right is port city, and now they are making amps as well. There are a few decent middle of the road cab companies like Avatar, whitebox, and voltageamps (from Canada). I think that those three are much higher quantity, and since they are not high priced the same level of expectation is not there.

I had an earcandy buzzbomb for a number of years, it sounded quite good, but was very beamy.
I also had a redstar blackjack 412 cab. This one was built like a tank, and sounded really killer.
I currently have a port city standard size cab, and it is great!!!

Agreed. I'm diving into the hardwood cab arena but I am in no way deluded that it will be the bread and butter of my business. The cabinets, keg tap handles, clocks and other items are niche market items that I happen to enjoy manufacturing. For a small company, even if you're doing both vinyl covered and hardwood cabs it's going to be very difficult to make a decent living at it without something else feeding your shop a consistent income.

I was not all that impressed with the mills stuff. Nice marketing and pictures , but to me the quality wasn't that special. The back panel was mounted with wood screws , not machine screws with t nuts to properly torque the back cab without wearing into wood over the years and in general, No soldered connections on the speakers or jacks, they use spade connecters which i don't dig either, nothing like a good mechanical connection and then solder, another bummer to me. As far as the sound, it wasn't bad, it's not a BAD cabinet overall, but to me just not worth the money they charge in my opinion.

I'd be pissed if I bought something supposedly high end, I opened it up and found that the connections weren't soldered. Even my crappy old marshall cabs are soldered. A spade connecter is the last thing you want on a closed back anything.

Stories like this remind me of how fortunate I am for the fact that Im completely content with a production Marshall and an Avatar Marshall cab Clone, neither one being special or hard to find at a great price..

Hmmmm... I like those ideas and there are a number of wildlife 3D reliefs available, although 3D work costs significantly more than vcarving due to the machine time involved.

I remember when the Mills hype was at a feverish pitch on the various gear forums.

To the point where "get a Mills" was the standard response to many cab inquiries.
