So what is considered the ULTIMATE MARSHALL??

Ok, so what is the difference between having Dave make an amp for you from scratch, or buying, say, a 1987X and giving it to Dave? A lot? Not much?

If we are talking stock marshalls then I would pick the early to mid 70's jmp's, I like the 2203 an 2204 jmp's also and prefer el34 tubes instead of the 6550 that came stock in usa models. I have two stock identical 75 1987's and I am thinking of sending one to freidman for a kitchen sink mod. One 75 came with its original factory box as it sat in a studio un used for years. They dropped in price due to the economy. I have a 79 2204 that rips which I might list soon also.

If I was looking for the perfect amp, say, to take to Dave Friedman and have it modded to make it even better...which should it be?

Be Specific...

I missed this part...

Dave will tell you that an early superlead is most desirable, but I know Dave can make any 1959 model sound fantastic

My amps are always set at 8 ohms with 16 ohm cabs, sounds best to me.
George, do you mean you run 8 ohms into a pair of 16 ohm cabs (impedance match) or into a single cab (mismatch)? If the latter, what difference do you hear from running 16/16?
Into a single cab, mismatch....when I got my first marshall cab, it was a basketweave deal with no marking on it....had no idea about anything at that point....just tried each position of the imp selector and left it where it sounded best. Ended up being 8 ohms...it's a tiny bit thicker/solid sounding to me. I don't think I've ever run two cabs with a Marshall head.

I also have 8 and 16 ohm Hotplates.....seem to always use the 8 ohm. :)
Not to insult you, but this sounds like impedance matching for dummies.
How so?
So your saying it's OK to set your ohms to whatever position "sounds" the best regardless of what the cabs rated for???

All you have to do is put a meter on a cab to check ohmage.

You are the one not sounding very versed in impedance mismatching, George is spot on.

BTW here is his Marshall tone in the 80s, he is the one with the scalloped flying vee ;)

The Jubilee's and DSL's are my favorite Marshall's personally. But I like gain without having to have my amp on 10 all the time. LOL. And for what it's worth the 8100 valvestates are still one of the best SS metal amps ever.

what are the thoughts on the re-issue 1959 plexi's?

the marshall TSL 60 is widely known as the best marshall available.

I'm smart enough to always match impedance.

in my opinion, the "holy grail" is the early super lead...early/mid 1968

Got a few other non MV Marshalls, but the earlier super leads are my favorite.

Oh, and as for the 1959 reissue...never liked it to be honest. Would go with one of these instead www.plexireplicas.com

If I wanted the best Marshall amp today I would by a Marsha from Dave Friedman/Tone Merchants.

Who was the genius that told you you had to match impedance? You do know I do this on purpose right?

I never told you to do anything, i don't put my gear under stress.

Only a fool would tell others it's OK to mismatch impedance with no consequences, ever hear of flyback voltage?
