Apparently, Killswitch Engage used an SLO for "My curse", sounds fucking good to me.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, well... SLO was designed "back in the day" and was and is still used/employed/played by a lot of the cats from the 80's era, and even some of the 90's cats. Pending on what mods you get, sure, the SLO can do brutals, but nothing like a modern day amp can mod-free. I have a lot of respect and love for the SLO high-gain circuit, Mike makes an incredible work of art, but what we've come to expect in the term "brutals" or better yet "brootlz", today's machines can do the job and it's because of today's machines that the term "brootlz" originated.

If this makes any sense.

Nice clip up there.

I love my SLO with depth mod. But I have a Rivera Knuck Tre to get into the brutal metal zone. IMO the SLO will get you 85% there, but it feels way diff than the Rivera. SLO does not feel as compressed as the KT. The KT is rediculous on the gain and sustain, it feels like the music sounds. SLO seems to be a little less forgiving?? But is sounds incredible... and it seems to like to be loud, stoopid loud, to get that SLO mojo going. I have not tried it, but maybe with a compressor and a boost, a scooped EQ pedal, an SLO would get very close to modern brootlz?

it will do it easy with a boost. depth mod helps also.

Nice clip.

I agree with those that say the SLO needs help for more Brootlz type tones. With the right pedal(s) in front it can. I think the articulation of the SLO actually helps, sounds heavier earlier, if that makes sense.

Depends on one's definition of Brootz... My SLO won't come close to the total destruction and mayhem my 5150 can dish out.

With certain speakers and cabs and the Depth mod, the SLO can get quite satanic and as brutal as a pissed off Spartan in 300.

oh ya. Mine wasn't so good for it before I got the depth mod and tweaked the speakers but now it's most of the way there.

It probably needs a boost or hot pickups to get to the most modern of modern sounding modern sounds. Maybe Mike will release a 10 string baritone edition soon...the super lo overdrive?

I loved the KTRE as well...but right now my UL and SLO are like a match made in heaven.

What speaks are getting there for you?

FYI

That clip was recorded with the gain on 4!

I think that for the next clip i will boost it with an ocd.

That will really tighten up the sound I think.

run scumback h75-lhdc/m75 in a port city ported cab.

Bone-stock SLO's can get as heavy as any other amp. I can prove that, if need be.

Yeah, but it has to be ungodly LOUD to get there. I played an SLO a few times and i thought there were plenty of other amps i would use instead if i were playing metal.

I hate an amp that needs a boost or OD always on to make it do what I want. A $100 pedal in front of a $4000 amp doesn't make much sense to me, and sounds like shit at the end of the day. Boosting leads and compressing the tone from time to time is fine.

Yep. I absolutely love the SLO. It covers a lot of ground imho, but I'd choose a 5150 or Recto over it for metal.
