Sounds like an Orange... but not.

Slightly off topic, but I've noticed the same problem with my RV50... Decent sounding amp at home levels... but the minute I get it into a band mix I start hating it with a passion because all I can hear are these atrocious high mids...

I had an Orange Rockerverb 50 mkI with 6V6's, I don't remember there ever being too much mids. In fact if I used a CL80, I got buried in a band situation going against a mesa mark IV. I had to use my V30 cab to cut through. Oranges are known for being dark, not too middy.

I think the problem here is probably the greenbacks, they may be too middy for the RV100 in the OP's case...

I have been looking to get a orange rockerverb, I tried a mk1 rv 50 and i liked it as it sounded british and marshall like but with more gain on tap then an 800. I want to try the thunderverb 50 as the footswitchable attenuator for leads etc seems very usefull. I also am considering the budda superdrive and the goldfinger but havent tried one in person. Any advice?

EVH speakers are Greenbacks.
Maybe that's my problem. I've been wanting to get a 2x12 cab for a while, maybe now is the time. I guess I have to decide on speakers.

Swap out the EL34's for 6L6's...instant mid range drop. You will have to re-bias it though
Actually the RV100 has a self biasing switch on the back of the amp. It will accept EL34's, 6L6's, 6CA7's,KT88's, 6550's just by flipping a little switch. :)

Nope...you will still have to re-bais it. I had a Rockerverb 100 and did it myself.

+1

Orange cabs all have Vintage 30s in them. I would try it on Vintage 30s. It will sound better, and that will add some bite and take away some of the mids.

eq in the loop maybe just to cut those frequencies some? I personally dig the hell out of the Orange sound but they have mids for sure, to me that's what makes them such a killer amp though because they sit so well in a band mix.

My rockerverb 100 never had any issues like this...it was one of those "set it and forget it" amps. One of the best amps I've ever owned...

Have you tried swapping out some preamp tubes? That could be the culprit...

That is 100% correct. The EVH speaker is a RELABELED Heritage Greenback, but nearly $100 bones cheaper... why aren't people buying them...

I haven't played one, but judging by the clips of the Goldfinger I've heard, the thing sounds pretty sweet.
