Strong hints that Van Halen 1 68 lead was just a slave amp and not the main amp.

Sounds great. Sadly, I had a MOD 5 from Steve K (like in the video) and it sounded nothing like VH.

I played a mod by Audette and it was very close to VH tone.
i wonder why your MOD 5 didn’t do the thing this one is doing?

that other fella Rob did his R/T mod on a peacemaker and it sounded cool to me too in a darker fair warning kinda way

for those not understanding why evh tone is almost impossible to get with a stock plexi just listen to his studio sessions at home :

the amp sounds like it was stuttering and spitting sound and it almost sounds like an old radio. it really sounds like the amp is broken.

Here we go again, I missed this :ROFLMAO:
Seriously, how can one try to draw such detailed amp spec absolute conclusions from such a poor quality recording transfered to youtube? Seriously.

@psychodave & @mentoneman , this Mod5 "unfortunate" experience sounds to me like another good example of how different things may work differently for different guys.

I honestly thought he was joking when he posted this, but apparently he is serious XD

Mark used an attenuator a specific 4x12 with I believe were blackback 25's and some other magic not disclosed.

The R/T mod I played was done to a 71 super lead and it was great. Wasn't dark at all. It was 95% VH tone. Obviously that last 5% is the most difficult to obtain, but you couldn't help but want to play VH riffs through it.

just found out a new josé mod that almost no one knows and it sound like that with an extra gain stage :

I had this on a cassette back in 1990. I bet I still have it somewhere. The quality I remember was much better than in this YT clip.

Anje, man we go back 20+ years from being on Plexi Palace. I remember you posting pics of crazy rare Marshall pieces... :m17:

I wonder if mark ever sold a true atomica. I've seen the guts of an amp that was supposed to be the real one posted online and it has nothing to do with the george metropoulos production. it was more like a stock plexi with a fatter cap on v1b and the amp had no grid caps at all and some weird mod at the inputs. And if i remember correctly it had the cerrem mod. i tried the cerrem but i'm not convinced because it flattens the eq a lot. however i never tried it with a variac.

The spitty, garbled quality you're talking about in that clip is pretty obviously happening to all the other instruments as well. It's especially apparent in the cymbals. It's either imperfections in the recording process, degradation that happened to the tape over time, and/or artifacts from a poor quality analog-to-digital translation. Again, that weirdness is happening to the rest of the instruments all in the exact same way which means whatever it is, it happened in post. It's not representative of anything that was going on with EVH's guitar gear.

Did you not notice that it's happening to the rest of the instruments also?

The mod 5 I had was done by Mark.

I also tried a Mark A Mod 5. An 86 2204. To me, it was a lightly boosted 2204, nothing more. Didn't get any VH vibes at all. Cool amp but I could get the same tone with a GE 10 in front.

Yes! Man I do miss this place, it was great, made some great friends, learnt a lot and had serious fun! Still have a few nice old Marshall pieces, but I especially remember you having some of the best tone & playing, loved it!
Hope you are doing well.

depending on what kind of speakers you're listening to. The compression added by my recording program makes it more fuzzier than it is, the closest to irl is threw an iphone speaker... there is way too much gain on it because the extra gain stage is wired like the one in steve vai's josé. Ed didn't have any gain stage or if he had at some point it was wired completely differently i suppose.
