I would take a Carvin, and just about anything else, over a Suhr or Anderson any day.

Alrighty then...

  ....oh, yeah! Just because you'd definitely be better off choosing "just about anything else" compared to one of those shoddy Suhr or Anderson guitars....no doubt! :loco:

You really have to own a Carvin Custom Shop guitar to appreciate how good they are.

Suhr makes amazing guitars. I have 3 & want more.

However, my Carvins are just as good as the Suhrs in quality & craftsmanship.

The only difference is that they're way cheaper & don't have the boutique name appeal that Suhr does.

My advise is to get one of each.

Always a good approach.

Isn't it? Everyone needs more guitaes!!!

While we're talking great guitars with no boutique appeal or resale value, throw in Xotic guitars as well.

Everyone knows about their pedals, but not about their guitars. They're hand made instruments with top notch woods & hardware.

I have two XS models & a XGC &, not unlike the Carvins, they're as good as any boutique guitar out there like Suhrs, Andersons etc.

well I do own 3 suhr guitars.. the reason for my post is this. Suhr doesn't do mahogany necks with maple fingerboards or walnut necks/maple fingerboards.. well carvin does. I love maple boards.

Who told you they don't do mahogany neck maple board? John may not recommended it buts available on their custom order form. It doesn't forbid you from choosing maple as a fingerboard if you choose a mahogany neck.

The problem with ordering a custom order like that with Suhr is that it will take 6+ months to build. I wanted a custom build Koa Suhr & the wait time they gave me was just too long, so I built the exact same thing using Warmoth parts.

Carvin custom shop guitars are built in about 1/3 of the time. I just HATE waiting for gear. I want is now or yesterday if possible.

As for Suhrs current wait time. I ordered my Modern Carve Top on Nov 8. The dealer recently contacted me and said it will be built in Feb. should see it in March.

I understand but he's saying that Suhr won't build something and that isn't the case. He should contact Suhr to be clear about the walnut too. You have to wait that long because they are backed up with a ton of orders. Tom Anderson is the same way. Maybe carvin doesn't have the same amount of orders and I'm sure they have a much bigger operation.

I had several Carvins and now have 2 Suhr Moderns. The Carvins are excellent guitars but I wouldn't put them on the same level as Suhr. They are excellent values because the workmanship is top-notch though. Resale value is not great though. Seems to have improved over the last few years though. You also want to check on whether or not changing pickups still requires routing the cavity. Overall, you won't be disappointed.

You can't compare a guitar you bolted together yourself to a Suhr.

Oh jeez I didn't read that post. Because of that statement I will disregard anything that Doughboy posts.

I've owned several Carvins and they have all been great guitars with outstanding build quality. Have never even touched a Suhr but I can't imagine what anyone could really do to a guitar to make it worth twice that of my Carvins.

I also find it hilarious that if John Suhr does not like a certain wood combo it is no good and should be considered an inferior, taboo combo. Who decided he is the end all be all authority? I've played a few killer guitars with mahogany necks and maple boards.

Do as you please young sir, but I have this amazing Warmoth guitar with parts & quality & craftsmanship that's as good as you can get.

My guess is you think with the logo & it's snob appeal 1st & the actual guitar 2nd. In that regards, you're missing the point of the actual "instrument".

Your "guess" would be wrong where I'm concerned. Still, comparing a parts guitar to a Suhr is just retarded.

Well, since I OWN Suhrs, Carvins & Warmoths, I can safely say you have no clue, since you do not OWN, PLAY & have the ability to compare them side by side.

What you're partaking in, is armchair internet hypothesizing based on your biases & not 1st hand info....& that sir, IS retarded.

Just to clarify, do you mean that the wood / hardware isn't as good as Suhr then? I was figuring that with the 'prettiness' I've seen from Carvin, the wood was good, but the corners being cut would be the fit and finish...

i have had them all.
This is my take:

1. Fender Ultra i own. For some reason it sounds better than anything i have ever played, to the point that i have been offered guitars at least 3 times it's value.
I have been offered two guitars for this one at one point, also, a TA, a Pensa Suhr, a Gibson Les Paul, etc.
2. TA, i loved it, second best guitar i have ever played.
3. The Suhr and Carvin.
