Yep. Sometimes you can't put them in the overhead due to some power trip bs. There needs to be a universal yes or no standard policy on this.

"We actually have video of the gear getting thrown into the cart."

It's the way of the world. Most people don't give a crap about doing their job well or right. Those same people usually think they should be paid more for what they do.

I have literally watched a baggage guy throw my guitars off the conveyor belt onto the concrete. They were in hard cases and I had bubble wrap too so they were ok. But same situation, they wouldn't let me put them in the overheads. In some ways I think having a gig bag is more leverage normally as you can argue they won't be safe in those if you have to check them but even then there's the occasional douchebag.

Luckily I have always been able to bring my guitar with me on airplanes.
Invest in a good protective soft case, (I have a well padded Warwick bag, cost me $60) it's worth it, as people are sometimes pushing their bags on top on my guitar in the overhead.

There has been a few times when the overheads are full and the staff kindly put my guitar in the coat closet at the front of the airplane. I think the key is to be very friendly with the stewardesses as you walk on the plane with your guitar. They usually ask where I'm playing, what kind of music...friendly chit chat.

There has been a few times where I was handed a sky-check tag to put on my guitar while boarding. I don't argue with them when they hand it to me...I just say "thank you", then put the tag in my pocket as I walk towards the airplane and bring the guitar on the plane with me.

If it was a double gig bag, I was assuming that meant that there was an additional guitar in the other side of the bag. I wonder if it was damaged at all?

Make a new airline rule that baggage handlers are responsible for anything broken, and I'm sure stuff like this won't happen.
Hell, make it the same for UPS handlers.

Guitar had to take a hell of a hit for a Scarff Jointed Hard Rock Maple neck to snap like that.

Well said.

In my ten years around guitars, I have never seen a maple neck split like that. Ouchies...

Scarf joint didn't cause the crack, and whether or not the guitar had one is kinda irrelevant in this case. It was the fact that there were holes drilled for the locking nut that caused a weak point in the neck. This is extremely common with older Ibanez guitars because of a few factors (angled headstock, thinner neck than most, possibly overtightened nut bolts).

Um nobody said that the scarf had anything to do with it. Its extremely common for older Ibanez guitars to be broken by shitty baggage handlers? good evidence of something though, I guess :D

Many have seen this happen with any type of guitar that is thrown around in a gig bag.
