Telecasters are just incredible.

You guys are not helping my Tele GAS at all. Long time Strat player too. Only tele I had was a MIJ contemporary tele with dual humbuckers. This thread is re-awakening my GAS for a real Single coil tele.

Well, just for the record, I am 40 and age has little to do with my want or lack thereof when it comes to Tele's. But you know? It's just personal preference, nothing more, nothing less. V.
Hey Bro, I wasnt inferring that your age( or anyones age) had anything to do with it and completely agree that its all about personal preference. Its like anything else, Neck size, width, heavy or light, low action, high action, seems like there are a zillion and one things about guitars that make one person love it and another hate it.. In the end, its all good!!

Kage

Completely concur, Kage - 100%... And as for the comment about me being all about the looks, seriously, it's not... I just can't play 'em due to the feel and shape and style of the ax. But it doesn't help that they're butt ugly in my humble opinion either

Alright, time to start my day...

Peace,
V.

I'm with you,I ordered my G&L custom shop a month ago and my brain is all over the place waiting for it,the naysayers are blind.
I'm going to piece one together also, probably some time after the G&L comes.
Congrats

Meet Rosie, my rosewood mexi-tele that I flattened the fingerboard radius from the 10th fret up. Sounds great and is a fun guitar to play!

I used to hate teles, but they are very expressive IMHO - and are really versatile. I put a single coil sized HB in the bridge of mine, and was playing Ozzy covers with it at a gig a few months ago. My main stage guitar right now is an Anderson Tele shaped Cobra.

I think everyone should have a Tele, a Strat, and a Les Paul.

I used to feel that way but they grew on me and I dig them. They have their place for what they do well like anything else but IMO, lack the versatility that I crave.

For me , I have come to realize that Stratocasters are the goods. Ive always played humbuckered floyded guitars even though the majoirty of my main influences played strats and the more that I play strats, it has me questioning why I havent been playing them all along. Truthfully, I think that every player should have a strat, tele and LP in their arsenal because they all have their places and uses.

I think a lot of it is generational, because superstrats were never "cool" when I first picked up guitar in the early-mid 90s. I didn't think teles were cool then either though, honestly. But I agree that you can get all the sounds you need out of a strat, tele and LP. Get those guitars under your fingers first and then worry about the supplemental ones ;) Teles are no joke, they will happily expose exactly what you're playing with unnerving clarity if you're not used to them. But in the hands of the right guy they are incredible guitars IMO. Here's mine:

Ive played a few recently - including one with P90s which was awesome, but i cant get over the look, and I cant get over the lack of options. Awesome cleans and punchy twang in spades, but I always migrate back to my strat.

ah well, I tried...

Yup, The first time I saw the guitar was a Who Video( Eminence Front I believe) and I loved the black body with white binding and maple neck and black hardware. There was this local guitar shop called Focus II guitars and I walked in one day and I saw the Tele on the wall. hen I saw that it had a Floyd, I was like a deer caught in headlights and before I new it, I was walking out the door with it!!!

Not really Tom, it got stolen along with 2 other beloved guitars ( A Hamer floyded explorer and a Hamer Steve Stevens) years ago. That was a total gutshot, especially since all of those guitars arent exactly easy to find anymore...

Not to take away from your love and passion WHATsoever, as I am a complete and utter advocate of the "to each their own" mentality, but of ALL the guitars out there in this world, the Tele's are the one that I cannot stand the sight of.

The look of the standard butterscotch Tele with maple neck makes me want to hurl. No offence, and I'm speaking with a lot of ignorance as I've never even brought myself to try playing one, but ya, I just think they're hideous.

Agree...I think everybody should own at least one of the same as well. If only for reference sake. I'm working towards that now. Been doing alot of sessions lately and having only Les Pauls and PRS's don't always cut it. Had the chance to play a real...nearly stock 62 Strat on a session recently and was just floored.

Anybody try a Tele with TV jones pups? Yay or nay?

Might want to PM cibyl, in the picture of his Tele's, looks like one has TV jones pickups.

I love the TV Jones pickups on my Gretsch, they are awesome.

Count me as another one who hated the looks back in the early/mid 80's but came to appreciate them later on. I think a butterscotch/black guard Tele/No-caster is one of the coolest, most iconic guitars ever made. The real ones that I've had the pleasure of playing all played like butter and sounded amazing. I even had a Japanese '52 reissue back in the early 90's that killed...still bummed that I let it go because of snobbery (it wasn't a US model  ).

One of my main gigging guitars throughout the 90's was an '89 James Burton Sig...sort of a Tele with a Strat complex. I had Lindy Fralin wind a set up his Vintage Hot pickups without tabs and create custom Strat/Tele hybrid pickup for the bridge...it's essentially a Tele wind on a Strat bobbin with stagged poles and a brass base plate. I wasn't a big fan of the Lace Sensors...these pickups really made this thing come to life.

It shows its wear but it was a great guitar...doesn't see much action these though but that may change.

FWIW, I believe Teles are more versatile than Strats. I think you can do more genre/style-wise and do more stuff well with a Tele. Don't get me wrong, I love Strats but I don't really dig the bridge or middle pickups alone on them so you have the same number of sounds as a Tele. Positions 1, 2 and 4 are obviously fantastic but it's definitely a Tele for me. I don't like trems either so that may factor in.

Are you guys for real? Tele's dont freaking rock? Townshend? Page? EVH? Izzy Stradlin? Mick Mars? Kotzen? Gilbert?
