Telecasters are just incredible.

Best decision I ever made was to buy my CS Nocaster. I'm pretty much addicted to everything about it. The tone, playability, looks, everything. In short, I'm now mad about Teles! They just do so, so much from two pickups and a three-way and sound incredible doing it. All this from basically a neck bolted onto a plank!

Any fellow Tele aficionados here?

Not to take away from your love and passion WHATsoever, as I am a complete and utter advocate of the "to each their own" mentality, but of ALL the guitars out there in this world, the Tele's are the one that I cannot stand the sight of.

The look of the standard butterscotch Tele with maple neck makes me want to hurl. No offence, and I'm speaking with a lot of ignorance as I've never even brought myself to try playing one, but ya, I just think they're hideous.

I used to feel that way but they grew on me and I dig them. They have their place for what they do well like anything else but IMO, lack the versatility that I crave.

For me , I have come to realize that Stratocasters are the goods. Ive always played humbuckered floyded guitars even though the majoirty of my main influences played strats and the more that I play strats, it has me questioning why I havent been playing them all along. Truthfully, I think that every player should have a strat, tele and LP in their arsenal because they all have their places and uses.

FWIW, I believe Teles are more versatile than Strats. I think you can do more genre/style-wise and do more stuff well with a Tele. Don't get me wrong, I love Strats but I don't really dig the bridge or middle pickups alone on them so you have the same number of sounds as a Tele. Positions 1, 2 and 4 are obviously fantastic but it's definitely a Tele for me. I don't like trems either so that may factor in.

Thats a preference Adam, the fact that you dont like the bridge or middle alone only limits it for you. Ive played strats with an extra toggle that engaged the bridge and the neck and that yielded some wonderful Tele Twang. I like all of them on their own and in various combinations. BTW, Robin Trower is a big proponent of the middle alone and he has some of the most glorious strat tones that I have ever heard!!! Hes one of yours, feel free to check him out( and yes, he can write damn good songs)

I still think that a person should own both...

Okay, I gotta put my 2 cents back into this thread... The original post was, at least in my interpretation, about proper Fender Tele's. Proper Tele's do nothing for me - they're limited, crude, kinda ugly, and not at all refined. Furthermore, the radius of the fingerboard never felt good whenever I picked one up - in addition to the woodblock feel of it. Just way too primitive for my likes.

However, SINCE these words were typed, there's been a plethora of beautiful instruments displayed - Tom Andersons, Suhrs, Sadowsky, etc... These iterations of the original are, at least to me, VASTLY different in their level of refinement and more than likely, playability. So, I don't really consider these sexy hype-up's as the same guitar I was posting my original opinions on. I am quite certain any number of these other iterations are waaaaaaaaaaay better than the original ape-age Tele I was thinking about initially.

don't forget some of the refined fender teles you've seen. i was suprised by some of the gorgeous custom and semi custom ones here, infinitely more refined than the original, the floyd rose equipped P90 necked one a little way above was particularly notable

Tele twang for me is from the bridge and bridge pickup, not the neck and bridge pickups together. Trower does have good tone but I don't personally like the middle position.

You must not have played many Tele's in your life, which doesn't shock me. You do hate them - Fender has made many different variations on their creation over the years with different neck dimensions from fat and wide to thin and skinny. They're definitely not all the same.

While Suhr, Anderson and the like make Tele-inspired guitars that are very, very good they're still not a true Tele. That said I own a Suhr Classic T w/P90's that slays your mom,....wonderful guitar.

Tele's are definitely not for everyone but I love them. I guess I like the simplicity. Classic, awesome guitar.

USA Custom Guitars 22 fret neck, 16" R, 6100 SS.
Warmoth hardtail bridge, drop in replacement for the super wide vintage spaced Chilicaster unit.
Pickups rewound by Tim at Bare Knuckle.

I doweled the holes and re-drilled the body for a four bolt neck plate instead of the tilt-a-whirl arrangement. (micro-tilt)
Headstock and body graphics by G.E. ....

My Road Worn 72' just kills. It replaced my Les Paul R6 (which I sold)
I was debating doing the 4 bolt neck plate also, but right now it's setup so good I don't fell like touching it

What exactly was done to the stock pickups? Are they hotter now?

I never played the stock Fender reissue. I sent out the pups before I had the neck.
I ordered them rewound to Nail Bomb specs.
The bridge was good, the neck was a little weak.
So it looked a little weird with one WRHB and one normal humbucker.
I went through more than a half dozen sets trying to find the right tone, Bare Knuckle, GFS, Motor City, Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio...
I've settled on a Tone Zone in the bridge, and I've got a Fred in the neck that's pretty good.
I have a new Jazz sitting here I may or may not try in the neck.
Guitar Fetish chrome pickup bezels covered the WRHB cut just fine.
Lollar has a WRHB now, but at $200.00 EACH I'm gonna pass.

that is awesome! but what are those 1/4 circles? I s that supposed to be where you laid it on a hot stove or something?
