TGP "hype machine" - contrived and intentional?

i am a member on TGP thou for some reason the suspend me every three months or so, hehhehehe.

There are some well informed people there, the only problem is that no one seems to be able to play the guitar, not even the shitty tune "la bamba"

When you watch a video of one of the members it makes you cry, well, not all of them, there are a couple that can play very well.

Anyone ever get the feeling that TGP is nothing more than a forum that's dedicated towards hyping up boutique companies for the sole purpose of increasing profits for certain boutiques? It sure seems that way at times.

Also, I just did a search on whether or not JHS is a true cloner like Freekish Blues was. It's odd how TGP went about censoring things.

I honestly thought that was the purpose of THIS forum.

I always chuckle at these threads. I know most of the TGP admins, mods, etc. I have a very uneasy relationship with Scott Peterson, and one other mod. Big Mike does question people's loyalties, affiliations and posts. Why? Cuz he's asked to by the admins.

I've been banned there (or given a timeout for two weeks) on three occassions now. Seems I can't let BS fly without calling people on it. I've learned not to think I can have "free speech" there, just as you can't on any forum that has "rules". Some of you forgot you agreed to those when you signed up.

Personal attacks about people's looks? Oh well, you get there when you run out of valid reasons to debate someone, you've lost the argument and it's all you have to fall back on now that you've been proven to have no facts/logic to your argument. Oh well, learn to stop arguing a point you can't win before you start arguing it.

Hype machine...ok...here you get the "fan boi" phenomena. You also have "shills", company employees masquerading as end users posting reviews, etc, etc. That happens on every forum. TGP just has the biggest user base (over 140k now?) if I'm not mistaken.

The recent pedal builders threads, exposee's and inquisitions as to whether they're "cloners" or not has been with some merit. You gotta thank Mike Landau for making an "open letter" statement. Not many have the integrity to do that.

Paid advertising subsidizing moderator shills that are unpaid? LOL It's $50 per year for a Gold Membership to support the server fees and be a manufacturer who can post ads/sales. I don't think shills work that cheap. You do get a bigger PM box (which I don't use) and an avatar pic. Big whoopee!

I pay more to have a banner at HRI, MetroAmp forum, and in Vintage Guitar than TGP.

Granted, I have seen some past issues with "Strat makers" (D'Pergo? and Suhr getting into it.The Suhr employee was fired). D'Pergo sued the TGP over the illegal use of shilling clients via PM from other manufacturers. Even though they didn't do it, they paid the price of having a PM system that allowed it to happen. That's why they now have a legal team, and stricter posting guidelines, too. You also don't get to post whatever slander, defamation and libel you want without PROOF. Heresay don't fly anymore, that's why some more outspoken members are banned, not only there, but here and at HRI as well. These leopards don't change their spots, they just change forums till they're caught doing it again.

I've certainly had my share of defending my products there (and here as well as other forums) from others who have their personal agendas, and either don't have proof, provide contrived pics as evidence, or use vague references to "what I bought from you sucked!". Yet when I called them out on it, they have no receipt for payment or paypal account in my records on file to prove they actually owned it to back up their statements. There's one sick guy here who falls under that category.

This kind of stuff is not TGP only, it's all over the net. Take it with a grain of salt. Realize some of these posters have an agenda...whether it's because they are just effed up in the head, or talked themselves into a piece of gear based on their friends recommendations. None of you should do that. All of you should try gear before you buy it. Learn to do your due diligence. Step up and do the right thing when buying gear, or shut up about your mistakes. It wasn't the manufacturer's fault you deluded or fantasized yourself being Hendrix just cuz you got some gear that was close to what he used.

Easy rule of thumb for most of the posters who have negative posts/experiences...ask them to prove it with something that would hold up in a court of law, documentation, etc. 99.9% of them will get shot down right then & there. It's no different than gossip you hear at a party. Either you're a gossip without proof believer, or you're not.

As for those who give others shit about what they can buy they can't afford due to having a bigger credit line or salary...so fucking what? I've seen Steve K and rockinchippy get haranged by members for being able to buy whatever they want. What is that? Jealousy, disbelief, anger, or gear envy? Whatever it is, get over it already. Stop opening up their threads when they post if you don't want to be made jealous of their latest purchase. I don't open their threads because the gear they're buying doesn't interest me (for the most part) since I have all the gear I need, and then some. Yes, I have pics to prove it, they've been posted here before.

If it does interest you and you can't stop your finger from clicking the mouse on their thread....well, then you have no self control and maybe you should stop clicking on their new gear threads and typing on threads like this where you bitch about it. Jeez, be a man about it, use some common sense, and keep your mouth shut. You whine like Steve and Alex owe you their gear cuz you're jealous.

Go get another job, buy what you want or STFU already. You can't blame people for working and buying the gear they want. I don't, neither should you.

And now it's time for more of my ulcer medicine. Jeezus, these types of threads really aggravate it.

Great reply Scumback Speakers, these gear forums need more sensible people like you.

I have a rather large schlong and get teased about it all the time. I try not to let it get to me and focus more on my playing. Name calling is uncalled for.

Wow, sage advice
"Who" , exactly is "jealous"?
"Who" exactly needs a "second job"?

Not sure about you Skippy, but I'm at if since 1971 or so. Seen it all, and decades before guitar forums. So, fwiw, if I wanna call bullshit, I usually do.
Speak for yourself. Don't tell others what they should or shouldn't do.

*applause*

TGP's huge user base has made it attractive as a guerrilla marketing outlet. It's cheaper to hire a shill and have him plant positive posts about their product and negative posts about competitors products than it is to use traditional advertising methods, i.e. magazines, banner ads, etc.

I don't envy the position they are in. On one hand they need to err on the side of caution as banning someone who is a legitimate user would be wrong. On the other hand there are a LOT of fake users on that forum now who's only purpose is to sway opinion.

Be thankful this forum is small and mostly immune from this stuff.

All gear forums are targets for viral marketing to some degree, Brad bought RT as a marketing portal for his business I always assumed.

Yes, but he didn't misrepresent himself. He openly acknowledges that he owns an MI store. The problem is that on TGP there are a lot of "users" who are disingenuous. Their presence their is strictly designed to sell their products and/or harm the reputation of competitors. This undermines the intent and credibility of the forum.

Every gear forum is infested imo, it's just a matter of degree imo.

RT is definitely not as bad as TGP or some other forums that come to mind. :)

Does it matter?

If you like the place or find it useful then great I bet they are happy to receive your donation. If you don't enjoy it or find it useful there is always redtube or youporn so you can rub one out and feel better about how you spent your time on the internet...

Agreed.

Yep.

There are plenty of manufacturers and builders who are just straight up "Hi, here's what I make."

Then there are plenty who go about it the wrong way with subversive tactics, comments, shills, disingenuous users, reviewers, etc.

The amp I mentioned was the Rockitt Retro Plexi. A musician/ PT builder making amps for fun and low prices. He slowly caught on, people bought the amps, posted clips...were ecstatic over the amp.

Enter Big Mike, TGP's expert Sloth in everything Marshall. I have never seen anybody, post after post, on a thread where guys were just sharing info on the amp, SHIT on every aspect of this guy's business, from parts, whether the guy was paying taxes, etc. He could not let these guys enjoy their cheaper than the competition, Plexi amps.
Then, if that wasn't bad enough, if you questioned him or challenged him, he suspended, banned people. All under the guise of "moderator".

Go look at the Joe Bonnamassa/ Carol-Ann thread, where Alan has to defend himself for building a custom run of JB amps (at JB's request) for folks that want one.

I am on TGP and I take it for what it is. Guys who REALLY like THEIR gear and have strong opinions about it. It has been a great way for m to learn about pedals and sell things I am not using.

I have posted threads about very affordable, MIC pedals like the Mooer and Moen stuff. Lots of people chime in singing the praises of low-cost alternatives. I haven't really experienced anything that I found too off putting.

EDIT: reply to carlygtr...I stand corrected (Carl just called me), it's Retro King that had the problem, not Rocket Retro. I need to email Kevin to let him know.

I've had 5 players bring over that Retro King builder's amps (for fun/etc) amps to try out speakers here at the shop/demo room. There was one that survived the car ride on the So Cal freeways here without something coming loose, the other four didn't.

Sorry, but that's a fact. Not trying to slag the builder, but when someone pulls out their amp from the back seat or trunk, plugs it in and it makes some farty/crackling noise that it didn't in West LA/Hollywood/San Fernando when they left an hour ago, that means something came loose during the car ride. Usually it was a loose solder joint. I saw the work done on the amps. Neatly laid out on the board, no real issues with the wire lead dress that wasn't fixed easily, not the highest quality parts, but then again, the price reflected that...but the solder joints were missing a ton of solder to make them reliable. They had the minimum amount of solder on them to hold the wire on, or into the board, turret, socket, etc. In many cases, just flicking at the wire in the turret with a chopstick would make it fly loose.

So four of them went to Carl / aka fusionbear as soon as it was seen that they needed to be resoldered. Once that was done, they seemed solid, tested Ok, no issues. But each and every one had that problem, and one had so little solder it had to be completely reflowed on almost every solder joint. That owner was pissed, and he had to pay to have it fixed. The other three were done gratis (no fee) since they were buying speakers and Carl builds demo amps and attenuators for me. That's been my first hand experience with the amps you mentioned. The guy just needs to use more solder and spend more time soldering it right before he ships them out.

As for the rest of your post, once again you resort to the personal attack over looks, or whatever. Get over it. Most of the guys in this industry are overweight, hell I was one of them until my food poisoning adventure (still ongoing I might add) that started at the LA Amp Show. But hey, 11 days in the hospital, three outpatient surgeries and four in the hospital and I lost 36 lbs!

But I don't rag on people for their looks, weight, and all that. That's just childish and immature.

I know you have issues with lots of people online (I'm sure I'm one of them since I don't believe most of your BS, and know better than you on many subjects you consider yourself expert on), but you might want to scale back your vitriolic diatribes when you can be point - counterpointed so easily, and wind up looking like a mean spirited troll.

TGP is a good resource for some info and the occasional Scott Peterson hissy fit.
