I hear Mark series amps throughout that release. Sounds Mesa to me.

I agree, too much compression for Marshall imo. There may be some marshall type amp in the mix but it is not dominate by any means.

Boss GE-10 or MXR 6 band. Well documented... My ears tell me the GE-10 is the VH I tone through my Metropolous 12000 series with the virtual variac on...

You are correct. Metallica (Black Album)'s RHYTHM guitar tone was dominantly Mesa/Boogie. The MarkIIC+, the MarkIV, the Studio preamp into Strategy 400 poweramp, the Quad preamp.
That Jose Marshall was added in as an extra flavour, most likely dialled in low in the mix. I guess it was slightly more prominent on some tracks rather than others.
I'm not sure which, but I can say there is a distinct timbre difference from Don't Tread on Me (has more breadth, bulkiness) to Through the Never (more clenched, edgy).

The black and purple Plexi amps that are seen in the studio at the time was for Kirk's guitar tone, and only a third of it anyway. Those Marshalls were blended in for the higher register of the lead guitar tone, while the Bradshaw preamp into the VHT poweramp was blended in for the lower register (lows & mids). Remember they had microphones all over the room with everything cranked up, so any high-sounding Marshall is going to have a slightly mellower sound than if it was close-mic'ed.
