forget the shredders....lets talk about rythm guitarist, (could be shredders that also tend to be very good rythm player too)

to me the top 3 are:

-Hetfield

-Dimebag

-John Schaffer

how about you?

You could list almost any tech/death metal guitarist for this. That shit is insane to play. Mustaine is up there too IMO.

yeah but I'm talking about the correct mix between rythm technique/speed and TASTE.

There are A LOT of fast right hands but few can write catchy GOOD queality riffs....

yeah Mustaine is very good too....just not in my top 3 :)

EVH and Jimi are very overlooked as far as rhythm is concerned IMO...

In addition to the guys the OP mentioned :

Gary Holt
Eric Peterson
Pat O'Brien
Mille Petrozza (Kreator)
Kurt Bachman (Believer)
Max Cavalera (Beneath the Remains/Arise ONLY. He really sucks now)
Chuck Schuldiner (Death)
Jeff Waters
Tommy Victor (Prong)
I forgot Dino Caserez

All these choices fit with the criteria of combining rhythm technique and writing awesome riffs

I really like Mikael (spelling?) from Opeth, and being an old 80's guy, I still get a lot of inspiration from EVH.

oh forgot one of the greatest!

his right hand was as good as his left....!

This dead guy (Bob Johnson) was the best rhythm player to ever walk the planet imo...

Clapton said trying to play one song accurately in Robert Johnson's style would be a life's work for a accomplished musician. Here is Eric attempting it.

My first thought was Dimebag followed by Mustaine.

I don't think Dimebag got the credit he deserved from normal ubergearsnobs like ourselves. I mean, he was #1 for the GC/peavey/mesa crew, but I am starting to think he could hang with just about anybody. Give him a somebody else's gear and somebody else's backing track, and he would sound just as good as Satch or Vai. IMO, of course.

Didn't bother with Hetfield or Dime they've already been covered

The guy who plays 13 bar blues. I know most of his material.
He is the guy who sold his soul so the guitar could be cool.
Not to many know of the story of how his wife and child died giving birth.
The true story behind the "selling"

You may be right Brad
He is the master

I agree Kage. Eddie is hard to emulate because he had tremendous feel, groove and swing. For me, I can playu his stuff but can't cop the feel of his playing.

I can only think of one guy who has a style of picking named after him...
