???Alot of Ed's cabs were mismatched internally as most JBL-D120's were 8 ohm and G12M 16 ohm.
He was known to blow some speakers but no greater sound than an overdriven speaker right before it blows.
Same with amps.
Few months ago i was playing my JCM DSL-100 w/a Hotplate, was getting this better than usual kick-ass crunch thru the cab.
Then i smelled that "smell".
Looked inside the head & 2 power tubes were redplating.
Shut everything off. Turns out i mistakenly plugged into the 8 ohm speaker out instead of 16.
Fortunately no damage what so ever but it sure sounded awesome for that short time.
That shouldn’t cause any red plating? 8 ohm out to a 16 ohm cab? I’ve blasted many cabs with my 72 using the 8ohm out. Never a problem. Maybe the hot plate is the issue?
Sure, I’ll match 16 to 16 most of the time but when I run 2 cabs, I’ll switch to 8 then plug into one cab and leave it one 8. Done this for years and I’ve never had any issues.
