Alot of Ed's cabs were mismatched internally as most JBL-D120's were 8 ohm and G12M 16 ohm.
He was known to blow some speakers but no greater sound than an overdriven speaker right before it blows.
Same with amps.
Few months ago i was playing my JCM DSL-100 w/a Hotplate, was getting this better than usual kick-ass crunch thru the cab.
Then i smelled that "smell".
Looked inside the head & 2 power tubes were redplating.
Shut everything off. Turns out i mistakenly plugged into the 8 ohm speaker out instead of 16.
Fortunately no damage what so ever but it sure sounded awesome for that short time.
???
That shouldn’t cause any red plating? 8 ohm out to a 16 ohm cab? I’ve blasted many cabs with my 72 using the 8ohm out. Never a problem. Maybe the hot plate is the issue?
Sure, I’ll match 16 to 16 most of the time but when I run 2 cabs, I’ll switch to 8 then plug into one cab and leave it one 8. Done this for years and I’ve never had any issues.

Who's story is this mine or yours ?
Happened just as described Bro.
No nothing wrong with the THD Hotplate.

No I totally believe you; just surprised that happened. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve run my amps 8-16 ohm cab, and never an issue.
I may have to be more careful going forward.

Yeah i am too and i got really lucky i investigated where the smell was coming from. Transformers & components don't last forever being abused.
It was sounding amazing @ 2.5 on the Master thru my EVH Wolfgang with the Hotplate so like a true amp guy i turned it up to 4.5 with the Hotplate and within 2 to 3 minutes that smell was all over the room.
I pulled the chassis for inspection [all clear] and swapped power tubes just because and have not had an issue.
Was totally expecting to see something fried due to the intensity of the smell. It was all tubes roasting.
That was last April.
Now i only use the Hotplate if trying to keep things quiet at low volume. Otherwise its all amp.
I always bias my DSL's @ 70ma instead of 80 like Marshall sez. Maybe that margin helped.

Ya,
Nice! Those three vids from Oakland are my all-time favourite Van Halen videos ever… I only wish that there was a complete concert video from those nights in June 1981. Unfortunately, I have been told that they only taped five songs from those nights, and used three.
Supposedly on the 13th , the third night Ed and Dave wore different attire so nothing from that show has been spliced in the 3 videos that were supposedly filmed on the 12th . After seeing this footage for so many years I can tell where some edits were made

Wow, I’ve been doing that for years too…
I will have to be more careful…
I always thought for some reason, it was only the other way around where you could run into putting to much strain on the Amplifier and Tubes, but I guess any mismatch can spell trouble.

Someone forgot to turn the bass player's guitar up. I see he's making movement with his fingers but there's no sound coming from his amp.
LOL edits we weren't supposed to notice . If you notice at 2:25 here the Frankie makes a quick appearance
