I think its terrific. The fact that she can get mainstream radio play and throw in some very good guitar playing is awesome. I heard her on the radio, had no idea who it was. Sounded like any one of these generic pop songs up until the guitar kicks in. Took me by surprise.
Is she revolutionary? To us no. But if she can connect to the intended audience, that's awesome.
And yeah, the song is catchy, the tone is very good and she does tear it up pretty good!

I will preface by saying that she is way better player than I will ever be. I am also jealous of the fact that she got to play for let alone meet Michael Jackson. The song is also really catchy and I dig it. I also agree with the fact that I whole heartedly support this over Britney, Christina, etc.
However, those who think auto-tune is not involved in this equation are delusional. She is a pretty bad live singer (like Taylor Swift). Its funny...someone mentioned Paramore (who I really actually like), but I think it would be awesome if Orianthi recruited a real singer like Hayley Williams for her act. That I would really dig. Her studio stuff is very vocally processed (like everyone else in her genre), but Hayley can really kill live as well.

Sure, there is definitely novelty in the fact that she's a girl. Sure thats why she's getting so much attention as opposed to the 500 guys playing like her on YouTube. As someone else alluded to, it doesn't make her average. She, along with those other 500 guys are ABOVE average.
That aside... There are lots of guys that are out there are are technically better players than someone like, say, Satriani. So what makes Satriani stick out? Why did Satriani achieve a level of success higher then them, or even someone like say Yngwie? It's the music. If she can write her own stuff thats better, then thats the thing. A mediocre player that comes up with a good, not technically demanding instrumental, in my book, is better than the technical virtuoso that sounds like a robot when he plays. So I think that that is ultimately where she will either fail and fade away (here today, gone later today) or stick around a while. Whether she is average, or above, or whatever, doesn't matter. Just cause YOU can play better, it doesn't make her bad, right?
As far as I am concerned I really hope she succeeds. I would love to see her become "the next big thing," and maybe someday we will be praising Satriani and saying "Thank God for Orianthi" because maybe she will bring kick-ass guitar playing back into the mainstream like it once was. Right now it seems outside of the niche genres (fusion, etc.) most of the kick-ass guitar playing is coming from country/blugrass music, and metal (death, technical, etc.). Not much kick-ass guitar playing in pop, rock, or even harder rock. I mean while there are some bands making heavier guitar music (not necessarily metal) like Alter Bridge, Breaking Benjamin, etc. I wouldn't really consider them kick-ass in the guitar department (not that the individual guitar players aren't good, but their songs are 99% rhythm, and those that do have solos, most of them aren't anything special - and not that kick-ass guitar is defined purely by solos either, but you get my point I think). So, I would love to see her raise the bar a bit in music as far as guitar playing goes. It would be about time that something OTHER than Guitar Hero and Rock Band bring the guitar back into more focus for kids (though thank God for those games too).
