This is not a metal amp

IME which speaker you mic, assuming none are damaged or different types of speakers, isn’t something almost anyone could hear in a mix. A recording maybe. For live sound my SOP is one of the speakers in the bottom cab, a couple inches from the cone, off axis.

Just look at the gut shot photos. Marshall left out like 75% of the mod. That's why it sounds like crap. A "Jose mod" is more than just a pair of diodes, a MV, and a bright cap.

That said, this would make a great donor amp for some real mods haha

Ding ding ding. I suspect this is the reason. I have not seen the gut shots nor would I even know what to look for but this makes sense. And like @Techdeth said, you'd think after all of these decades, someone with the deep pockets like Marshall could have asked, researched, borrowed, hired, subcontracted, stolen, engineered, something that is awesome. No offense to the DSL and JVM, they are very decent amps for what they are but I don't know too many people that consider them awesome. The JVM in particular has this overly compressed 'fake' tone to it for lack of a better way of saying it. There are some great clips out there tho - @Techdeth 's vid of his students playing ACDC is a good example. The 900 SLX and 2555 are decent too don't get me wrong - just that there are other amps/mods, for me, that I'd take over a stock one.

Prolly just needs to get the Chinese toobs out of it. :dunno:

Not all Chinese tubes are bad. I used to say the same thing. Some, not all, are still made in the old school tube manufacturing facilities that have high tooling and quality standards. Otherwise, yeah - fuck China.

they did get it though, the DSL and JVM's are great. if a SD1 into a DSL dosent satisfy your marshall itch, i dont know if any marshall is gonna work

Not wrong. See above. The JVM didn't satisfy my Marshall itch and I tried and tried at least 5 or 6 times. Prefer the DSL. The OG v2. But who wants to pay $3,700 for this Marshall 'modded' new stock amp only to have to send it to someone like @FourT6and2 to make it sound great? It might make a great donor amp - but not for that kind of cash. IMO.

If you watch the whole video, Ola actually gets it sounding pretty great and quite metal by the end.

Eh. Even at the end it sounded like a fizzy mess. I mean, maybe Iron Maiden or something, but not the kind of metal I like. It was super percussive I'll give it that but I'm calling Ola out on his 'pleasant tone' comment. I bet in drop C, B or A it would completely fall apart. :dunno:

He didn't put it through his normal paces of what he like to play - but maybe that was on purpose? I hope not.

Well, he’s right about it not being a metal amp. Shame he didn’t demo the jcm800 one, he probably could have got a good sound out of that one.

Did you watch the whole video? He plays Haunted type riffs near the end and he's in drop C. I didn't hear any fizz either.

Sounds absolutely terrible...I'm sorry, but this is a huge missed opportunity for Marshall with the mod series. All they had to do is contact one of the highly competent techs (several are here on the board) that perform killer sounding Marshall mods and work out a simple licensing / royalty agreement. I don't know who at Marshall tested these "mod series" amps and gave them the R&D thumbs up...Sad.

Meh, the internal volume of the cab is shared and heard regardless of a coupla of inches of inward slanted baffle. That cab is also the TV model (tall vintage) so it's a bigger cab.
I have put a 57 in front of it a greenback loaded AX cab enough times to know mic'ing the speakers in the angled part is not the way. When I mic'ed them like that the recorded tone was quite like the tone Ola was getting in that video. Thin, lacking beef, and harsher highs. I would never allow a soundman or stage hand to mic my cab like that. It's a greenhorn move.

Well he's not recording an album or anything with it lol. Plus he has a room mic going. The mic position didn't lend to any false interpretations. What we heard is what that amp actually sounds like. Strident, peaky and loud.

If you're suggesting it's the amp I'm suggesting that those terms you used to describe it are magnified by micing the upper speakers in the angled part of the cab. That someone would do a review and mic the cab like that makes me think they are a greenhorn.

No not at all. In his previous video he visited the Marshall Sweden HQ and the amp sounded exactly the same and it was only room mic'd. They also sent him the 800 Mod head which will be demod next on his channel.
