Tired of today's guitarists, metal and rock

Monolord, Sleep (though around a long while), Pallbearer, King Buffalo to name a few. As I'm getting older I'm going back to more roots based metal and Stoner/Doom fits the bill. I still dig old school metal and meatlcore, but the new djent and million notes a minute stuff isn't for me.

Badass band. Met them after the show when they opened for Mastodon and Primus. Their set was actually my favorite of the night and I had no idea who they were. That says something.

Just old rock. Still manage to slip in some Overkill though.

Again I know most of you are older than me and into slightly different forms of metal, but I have been watching an Obituary concert from a few years ago on YouTube. Great show. I watch a lot of concerts on YouTube (most 1080p) as I am working in my shop (mostly listening not watching) but there are a lot of great shows with good audio and pro video. There are a few COC and Crowbar ones that I enjoy, lots of live Slayer concerts, older Down concerts and even some decent Phillip H Anselmo and the Illegals (quality varies show by show of the performance), some good Exodus shows too. Morbid Angel has a few good shows, Sleep and High on Fire as well.

On the other realm, Chris Cornell has some great acoustic performances that I enjoy. Soundgarden (prior to Cornell's passing) had some good live shows that were shot well too.

I don't understand bitching about 'modern' rock and metal, nobody is making you listen to it. Do some searching and find what you like. It takes less energy to type in the search bar than to post a thread complaining about how you don't like it.

thing is you dont even have to search anymore, spotify will find bands for you based on what you listen to, same with youtube and im sure other streaming sites. peoples smartphones are probably lurking in to whatever FM rock station they are listening to and already have a new playlist ready to go. theres literally no excuse these days to not find new music

That is truly valid. The only service I use is YouTube with ads, and I spend most of the time watching concerts. It sometimes shows you things that aren't in that album you have heard 1,000 times

Dude, if you ever get the chance to see "Brit Floyd", go. I took my friend to a show and I swear I thought he was going to levitate off the ground when the solo to "Time" came on. They do a great tribute to Floyd.

I think it's the arrangement and production/mixing that ruins the modern music for me. Gotta stick for the old stuff in that case.

I made a “Classic Rock” playlist on Apple Music that’s all stuff I grew up hearing on the radio in the 70’s and 80’s. It’s a nice departure from metal, and resets my head a bit. I have an “Alt Country” playlist as well - great writers like Jason Isbell and the like. Mellows me out a bit.

There's not much post 1979 music that I listen to. The 70's was an incredible era of experimentation, never to be repeated.

I think it's the arrangement and production/mixing that ruins the modern music for me. Gotta stick for the old stuff in that case.

THIS. Everything sounds vanilla because the formula is already played out, but the ear at least used to hear a diff mix, diff tone, and style. Today, everything is the same and almost makes everyone sound like they are playing the same thing more than ever. Time align to grid, drum samples, loudness wars, It's over. Refreshing to see some of the lesser known artists releasing material that sounds more authentic though. I sometimes let lousy college radio stations play or non mainstream radio play and the indie stuff may be garbage but I appreciate hearing real instruments, sometimes in the same room together old school style, and more authentic performances. Real vocals. Real snare.

Yeah man!! You know what they need to do? They need to have a recording studio that brings in bands and says "you got two weeks to record. Practice your crap and then get in here and we are recording, warts and all". I guarantee those imperfections, etc. will result in a great sounding album. Like we have all discussed on the forum before, too polished sounds like garbage.

Man that girl is hot! That was a great balance with some nice vocal mix in there, etc.

I've mentioned it before but the Foo Fighters "Wasting Light" was recorded on tape. It has a nice warm sound, etc. and is a great example of what producers moved away from. Metallica's "Death Magnetic" was IMO, an example of how to NOT do it. Distorted with the pushed faders and such a shame because there were some great songs on there.

I really like this and want to buy it but having issues finding where I can throw money at this man. I know I can play it on YT but I like to throw good players a little of my money. It should be all too easy, am I missing something?
