TMS.. Yngwie

Yngwie smokes me. Let's make that clear first of all. Yngwie from Steeler through Marching Out is one of my favorite all time guitarists.

Now can I say this? He was horrible on TMS. Either he was playing quite sloppily on much of it AND his tone was horrible, or his tone was so horrible that it turned what would have been otherwise clean playing into mush. Way too much gain. WAY TOO MUCH! I hate when a guy does a sweep arpeggio and I hear the first note clearly, then I hear a big bunch of garble, then I hear the highest note of the arpeggio clearly, then a bunch of garble and then the lowest note again to end it.

I have seen Yngwie play live many times with the best being the first solo tour after Rising Force with Jeff Scott Soto singing. I teched for my friends band that opened the show so I got to hang backstage and instead of doing my job like I should have, I stood outside Yngwie's tuning room while he just whaled away in there through one of those mini Marshall stacks. I swear, his tone through that was a bazillion times better than his tone on TMS. Seriously, I want to slap someone after watching that.

And now, I'm off to listen to some live Alcatrazz and one of the coolest rock strat tones ever IMO.

You would hate hearing me sweep. Working on it though.

I actually enjoyed it and so did the guys from TMS! Yngwie is a living legend (like him or not), he looks great and had a great attitude. That's just classic Yngwie to me, he's the father of modern neo classical rock guitar and has never changed! I think it must be challenging coming up with stuff to play in such a short segment before commercials....

I watched the second show with Yngwie a couple of nights ago. My first impression is TMS needs to move back to LA so they can get better guests. No offense to the east coast guys, but there are just more rocks stars out here.

When it comes to Yngwie and neo classical 80's shred, I'm going to draw a parallel between him and Michael Jordan. You'd have to be nuts to not consider Michael one of the greatest players to ever bounce a ball. However, if you went to see Michael and he went 4 of 23 from the field and fouled out in the 3rd quarter, I don't think anyone would fault you for saying "Michael had a BAD night." Or even, "Michael sucked tonight."

I think Yngwie sucked on TMS and I think his tone was awful. I'm not disputing him being one of the greatest rock guitarists to ever walk the earth and still one of my favorites. I was talking to Ant (70 strathead) former RT member and Yngwie freak and he felt the same way. I mean seriously, are you guys not hearing the large amount of flubs and the large lack of articulation in his playing on TMS? This is the guy who slapped us all silly with his articulation and what seemed to be near flawless playing. That's why it was so shocking to me.

Am I better than Yngwie? Hell no!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could I have done a better job than he did on TMS?...................... Why am I even pausing to think about it? The Yngwie I love never gave anyone a reason to pause and wonder if they could have done better. That sounded like 1st generation Line 6 modeler tone too.

Tough crowd here? Yeah. It's freaking Yngwie Malmsteen. He has made a career out of bitch-slapping tough crowds and making us fawn like school girls at a One Direction concert.

Go ahead, flame away. He seemed cool and personable and like he was having fun. I dug that part.

Very few of our childhood guitar hero's are knocking it out of the park and blowing us away anymore. I cringe with one eye closed as I pull up any "new" YouTube video of Lynch playing these days. Heck, EVH isn't blowing us away either. I guess these guys are just getting old and don't care as much. Even Kotzen sounded like crap on his TMS appearance (of course he always has crappy tone anyway.... haha).

The breakthrough virtuostic guitar playing was one thing in the early 80's ( mind you on a strat with non master marshalls) , but how about composing a concerto suite for full orchestra and choir , loaded with brilliant melodies, counterpoints, harmonies and yet performing it live and improvising all over and always on perfect meter ( which is extremely difficult to do in that context with no percussion, and his signature perfect pitch/vibrato. Any body here accomplish that? Many people just don't listen to the musical substance around a lot of his material I'm guessing because there lack of musical knowledge . Especially Classical music. Yngwie is Yngwie...he is brand and whether he sounds repetitive, is a brand. To compare him to Robin Trower whom I love, is just dumb. I also think he played and wrote some brilliant music past the 80's, you gotta just listen and not judge by the picture.
