He's great in small doses. The reason he plays so effortlessly is because it's HIS style. Others imitate instead of getting their OWN style.
Funny, cause w/ all their technical ability I see guys on YT playing EVH and Yngwie all day long. You don't find many guys who cop Jimi, Trower, Blackmore, Page, etc so accurately, IMO.

Like Yngwie, they all have very distinct styles. It's hard to copy distinct style without sounding lame.

That's why whenever I've been in cover bands I never tried to cop a style. Just get the spirit of the tune and do my own thing. Improvise. It's what I love about music. Creation of something out of nothing. I can't stand to hear someone copy someone else note for note.

I'm with you on that train!

I read that Angus is experimenting with 9-string guitars and a fanned fret capo?
Yeah he is going to do a classical solo CD with sweep picking....monster shredding and tapping. Death Metal follow up after that.

They have been doing death metal for years.....just haven't learned to tune down low enough yet to sound correct......

I've seen YJM several times, caught and still have several picks, had a stage bruise across my chest from literally being that close and stuck up against the stage edge, I've even shaken his booted leg as he knelt down in front of us shredding. The entire time, I was oblivious to the stories of his character. Recently I read an unofficial YJM biography and it - along with my advanced years - really left me feeling ashamed and filthy for supporting him so enthusiastically.

Odyssey remains a favorite album and I've only caught the beginning of TMS with him, but I really wish he'd clean himself up a bit with regard to the "metal mess" he has draped around him.

The facts remain YJM really did pioneer the definition of classical shred guitar. I have my qualms with many other aspects, however, there's no denying he's been a major force in the shred guitar arena and in my guitar travels. "Dreaming" will always grab my attention. It was also my introduction - admittedly naively so - to Joe Lynn Turner.

I was fortunate enough to see Yngwie in Detroit's St Andrew Hall way just before the release of Marching out, they played a couple tracks from it but it was from the Rising Force tour...they guy has total command over the instrument even while doing crazy stage moves...Yngwie defines a genre and paved the way for a lot of neo-classical players, Tony MacAlpine and Vinnie Moore come to mind, after that the market was flooded with everyone and their brother putting out neo-classical instrumental albums....that is not Yngwie's fault ;)

Also what defines neo here? If you ever broke down Yngwie you can see he's ripping off classical music with lot of violin/cello type of things. You seriously could pick a Bach concerto play it note for note on an electric through a distorted amp and people will say you're ripping off Yngwie but you are not playing a single note from Yngwie.

I'm glad black sabbath the band still rules, but they need to work on their online postings ...... do trolls eat bacon????
Tony Iommi......meh.....he's no Trower. LMAO!

I love watching Yngwie play, even his stuff today though the old stuff is just unreal and a lot cleaner. I find him very inspirational in the fact that every time I watch him I immediately want to pick up my guitar and play. Rock on Yngwie!!

Yngwie was a legend back in the days especially with Alcatrazz and his first few or so solo LPs. I just got tired of him over the years, but you cannot deny his originality and influence in the world of guitar.

Once again he proves that he is the Man !! There are critiques, haters, etc...
I think the guy is just amazing after all these years and never ceases to amaze me.

I still haven't pulled it up on the DVR yet, but Yngwie will ALWAYS been "the man" in my world. I matured many years ago and care more about tone and phrasing than shredding... but he will forever be the guy who inspired me to chase my dreams and work hard back in '85 when I first discovered him. Without him, I may have never studied classical guitar in college and gone-on to gig it at weddings/churches, learned and gigged flamenco, or got the chops to play Brad Paisley-esque leads in country bands years before I'd ever even heard of Brad. I credit that crazy-ass Swedish-American with much of who I am as a guitar player and musician. Long live the Young Viking Chief!!!

What's all this about?

Back in the 80s when Yngwie first broke big, I sometimes felt a bit embarrassed for him when I'd read articles and he was a bit over-the-top. But a lot of the things that I've read about him over the past decade plus, leave me liking him more and more. For one thing, the guy was born in Sweden and grew-up there, but he's got more red-blooded American in him than half the people lucky enough to be born here. He may always be a bit over-the-top, but he made life more interesting for me and many others and I'll forever be grateful for that.

Yngwie smokes me. Let's make that clear first of all. Yngwie from Steeler through Marching Out is one of my favorite all time guitarists.

Now can I say this? He was horrible on TMS. Either he was playing quite sloppily on much of it AND his tone was horrible, or his tone was so horrible that it turned what would have been otherwise clean playing into mush. Way too much gain. WAY TOO MUCH! I hate when a guy does a sweep arpeggio and I hear the first note clearly, then I hear a big bunch of garble, then I hear the highest note of the arpeggio clearly, then a bunch of garble and then the lowest note again to end it.

I have seen Yngwie play live many times with the best being the first solo tour after Rising Force with Jeff Scott Soto singing. I teched for my friends band that opened the show so I got to hang backstage and instead of doing my job like I should have, I stood outside Yngwie's tuning room while he just whaled away in there through one of those mini Marshall stacks. I swear, his tone through that was a bazillion times better than his tone on TMS. Seriously, I want to slap someone after watching that.

And now, I'm off to listen to some live Alcatrazz and one of the coolest rock strat tones ever IMO.

Yeah I was freaked out the first time I saw YJM. 1985.....
I was 14 years old (never heard of him) went to my very first concert which was the AC/DC Fly on the Wall tour.....Yngwie opened up and it was mind blowing.
I had been playing/plinking guitar for a few years by this time and when I saw YJM it was nuts.
But I actually forgot all about him once AC/DC hit the stage!
Ended up getting a few of his CD's as the years went by. Had some great songs. Like him....but as stated earlier, can only deal with him in small doses.

Same tour I was talking about. My friends band went on before Talas.

I don't like Yngwie... bad tone, boring playing.

I don't like bacon either.

EVERY guitarist is ripping scales someone made up years ago.

To rip on Yngwie shows the depth of your intelligence. BS comes from the shallow pool.

He is a legend.
BULL SHIT!

YJM is old news. He's nothing more than a backyard high school party player.

You want to hear "Class A" tone and brilliant guitar playing without all the BS repetition listen to this. Never mind the bad audio quality, just (if you can) focus on the brilliance of the great guitar player that he is.

Watch as Robin walks you through the secrets of magnificent technique and absolute beautiful tone. Take particular note at 15:20.

YJM is nothing more than a guitar hamster on a perpetual wheel.

Welcome the master of sheer tonal quality . . . & technique that YJM will never be able to comprehend.

Enjoy!

YJM can play the blues quite well, he cuts it really strict and plays a ferocious blues. I was actually quite surprised to see footage of him one time playing the blues and he was just killing it. Trower is a great player, but I would rather hear Yngwie do the blues, but hey, that's just me.

Yngwie plays the blues about as good as Steve Vai   He uses a few blues scales and repeats over and over. Trower is a true improviser, a seasoned blues/ rock player. Who you like better doesn't matter but when I see people say Yngwie can play blues it's an insult to the genre IMO

What a bunch of rubbish. Blues purists are as bad as bluegrass purists, or any other art form hardliners.
