PS: Tool with no Sober??

We have Sober in the mix. I mean, its the easiest song they do, but truthfully, its only there for filler.

I'm anxious to get enough songs down to where we DONT have to play it.

Yawn.

The Grudge is proving to be a bit of a challenge (timing wise...).

After we get that one down, we're going to move on to Right In Two.

It'll be like, couple skate time, with a nice ballad.

use sober as your encore or something. People will want to hear it. You know how many people I hear bitch, when I've gone to see Tool, and they don't play it? The die hard Tool fans won't care, but the casually Tool listener will. Sometimes ya gotta play songs that bore you.

Overall it sounded good. I wouldn't worry a ton about your guitar tone, or at least adding any gear at this point. You've got an amp to pull off the job WELL. Mess around tweaking channels. I don't think we can accurately judge your tone with a signle room condenser mic. I'd have your singer work on his upper register screams/harder singing. He sounds like he's hitting the top of his range at points. If he hasn't been in a band for several years, he may just need to get back in shape and that's just working his voice alot and concentrating on pitch. He's doing a good job copping the sound though.

I hate to say it, but whatever the song is tuned to originally, you should tune to that. If you weren't a Tool trib. band, it wouldn't be as big of deal. You guys seem to have the sound down really well, make the songs sound how people know them to sound.

I'm not a die hard tool fan, but neither I'm a fan of any band, but I still think sober is the best song they have ever written yet. I've heard it probably 1000 times & it doesn't bore me to hear it again.

I don't know how it is from where he is standing, but if I was hearing what I hear in this clip I wouldn't be able to stay in tune mainly because your guitars are not loud enough in the mix.

The mix in the room sounded ok. The bass player wasnt happy with the first mix we got (which, admittedly was guitar heavy) so he moved the mic.

I'm new to the wireless thing, but I've got one. I dont know why I didnt just cruise around the room looking for the sweet spot. I will try to remember to do that next time.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll need to keep Sober. The good news is that it doesnt take much practice on that one. Most of the older songs are quite easy (compared to anything from Aenima on up). Vicarious was a MOFO for me. I'm not looking forward to the hours Jambi will take. Right in Two wont be too bad - hopefully.

Yes, we'll stay in tune with the records. It makes sense to me to keep it that way. Singer has to practice with the records (like the rest of us) so he SHOULD be able to sing in standard pitch if we're gonna pull this off.

I'm of the opinion that if you listen to our band CASUALLY, as most non-muso's are apt to do, you dont really notice the goofs too bad. I mean, we dont completely trainwreck or anything. My point is, we could probably get on stage pretty quickly with this. But in the back of my mind I know that fans of Tool are likely a) musicians and b) they'll KNOW the music and will hear the goofs, so I want to keep fine tuning these songs till I'm a LOT more happy with them.

I really appreciate the input guys.

I think it sounds pretty good. I think that the bass needs more upper mids, possibly treble. I actually disagree about the guitar sounds. I think that the only part where the guitar needed more was the cleaner parts. The vocals aren't bad either. I just think that the singer needs to learn the difference between "more intense" and "louder." Know what I mean?

As a note, ch 2 should be fine with the Herbert... you're looking to get into VH4 ch 3 territory. I can get a decent approximation with Einstein mode 3 and gain around 1 - 2 o'clock, eq all around 12 - 2 o'clock with a bit more in the mids then anywhere else. Don't dime the gain, you want just enough to be able to sustain any note into controllable feedback... which is a Diezel amp's party piece!

Tuning for all Tool's songs (to my knowledge) is drop-D at A440. Adam certainly doesn't change guitars or tunings at specific points during shows.

Yep, these settings sound about right for Herbie`s channel 2+ as well. You don`t need much that much gain for Tool, I would say no more than 2 o`clock.
