Tool's Adam Jones performs the National Anthem

Upon my first listen I was a bit disappointed, I must say. But then as I was listening to it a few times a few thoughts occurred to me:

First, he's using his standby Diezel and not his whole rig...so his sound is a bit limited. Next, he's probably trying to keep it "normal" for the folks that are there and at home. And third, there are bits that are classic Adam...and like most of his music, you have to listen to it a few times before it sinks in and you like it...which I think is very appropriate and so totally Adam.

I believe that I did hear signature Adam sounds at the following points:
:21, :40, :57, :1:04, 1:06, 1:11, 1:15-1:27 (unison bends), 1:49-1:53, 1:59, and 2:04...basically littered if you really listen.

I think if you're not a Tool fan and you only listen to it once, you probably won't really like it....wow, big shock. However, if you know Adam's playing you'll find reason to like it. For me, after several listens...I do like it and I'm glad he did it, and glad he did it this way. Awesome.

And before anyone calls out fan boy with this or any other retarded internet spelling...yes, it's true. I know it, and I'm not embarrassed in the least, so you can save it. I love Tool and Adam's work...and so I may be completely biased.

Tone sucked. Playing sucked. More screw up's than a Kirk Hammet solo.

weedley weedley gurgle gurgle woot woot fart

That's this conversation summed up...

In my opinion, the worst thing about that particular clip is that there is just not much to say about it, positive or negative. The sound quality is actually very good for a loud arena mic'd and recorded, but the experience was probably a lot better standing there for it in person. Live show more fun than a recording... hmm, where have I heard this before?

I am not a Tool fan. Not yet anyway.

I am 100% positive that I couldve played that better than he did
in front of that many people, knowing your being broadcast all over the world, without a backing band, all by yourself...

Is that something you have alot of practice doing??
because even he doesnt do that alot and he's a fuckin rock star of the HIGHEST caliber...
Yes, yes, yes, yes, and no

I expect waaaaay more from a rock star of the HIGHEST caliber. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more

just sayin...

Sounded like rock and roll to me. Would much rather see a guy going for it with out a net and keeping it real than a Berklee Robot playing Guitar Muzak note for note with no f@#kin attitude.

I'm a huge Tool fan. But it sounded like ass to me. Awful tone and mediocre playing. But Adam shines in the Tool band context just fine.

Tough crowd around here. Nothing can compare to Jimi's original version from Woodstock, but I thought it was still pretty cool.

Wow.. Lot's of hate. I listened thinking it was going to be a trainwreck. It wasn't too bad. What did you expect him to do. He's not a real picker or shredder. He did what he could.

Tone was angry. I dig it.

Based on the responses I thought it was going to be a trainwreck too  I didn't think it was bad at all. There's not really much that can be done with the star spangled banner that hasn't been done already IMO. I don't think think a guy jerking off a guitar neck for 2:00 would've been much better.

To me there's a difference between playing from the heart, and just playing like crap. When it comes to the National Anthem I'd rather hear it done right and leave out all the slurs, open notes, and excessive noise.

I think Slash did it right.

It wasn't insanely good, but his bends are so fuckin creepy. You could hear that "sober" type of vibe towards the end. And I love his tone. Maybe that's just me.

Horrible rendition.. horrible tone (way too much gain), tuned too low, blaaa all around for me. Yngwie's was awesome! vibrato of a real maestro! Anyone can play with just gain and feedback.

So let me brake down peoples opions on this performance by age...

Early 20's or younger thought it sucked because there was not enough excessive arpeggio sweeping.

Late 30's and 40's crowd thought it sucked because there was not enough finger tapping

Late 20's to 30's crowd thought it was awesome just because it was Adam Jones never mind the playing.

Over 50 crowd is at TGP posting about Dumbles and they dont care.

I wish I could watch this, but I am at a hotel with crappy wifi :(

Bullshit response, has NOTHING to do who was doing it but the final product. I think you may be remembering the Yngwie vid that was up yesterday and all the demographics you mentioned liked it.

I remembered this version from 1991 I was so impressed with it, please tell me where the shred starts and stops.................

MUsicianship is musicianship regardless of demographics, instruments, or school you attended to build your chops.
