Uncommon V30 speaker mixes

I'm contemplating speakers to mix with a pair of Mesa V30's in an Egnater Armageddon 412 cab. I prefer top & bottom over an X pattern since it sounds more consistent as I move around. I'm looking for something outside the traditional Greenback or T75 mix that still sounds good. I'm sorta thinking Classic Lead 80's. Anyone tried a V30/CL80 mix? Any other recommendations outside the norm that sound good? I'm open to mixing with other speaker brands outside Celsetions; just not WGS.

I don’t see too many people mixing different versions of V30s (Mesa vs Marshall vs Celestion label).

Not sure if you're goofing or being serious, but not a bad idea. Combining something that's the same but different.

I’ve mixed the V30 with who knows how many speakers. At one time I had 32 different speakers. Honestly it mixes well with pretty much everything. Only ones that stood out to my ears as “bad” was a Heritage G12-65 and various Fane Ascensions.

As far as non-traditional, my best 2x12 has one of the new UK V30’s and an Amperian Revolution 65. Other good matches were the Avatar Hellatone 50 (Misco made speaker) and a Jensen Nighthawk (would be my #1 for modern heavy tones). You said no WGS, but the Invader matches better than the Creamback 65 to my ears. So many options these days.

Yeah, I' said no WGS because I haven't have the best experiences with them in the past. They sound good at low to moderate volumes, but when you start pushing them to band volumes they kinda fell apart. Especially compared to Celestions they just didn't hold their definition at high volumes. Though I haven't tried WGS is at least a decade so things may have changed since then. But they're the only speakers I've had that suffered from this issue.

Haven't heard of Amperian before. I'll need to check them out.

V30/G12H30 is a sick combo.

I have two separate Mesa V30 and CL80 cabs. They pair well together independently but have never mixed them in the same cab. I think both speakers high end freqs would clash be a bit too much in the same box tho.

Mixing different V30 flavors is cool. You said no WGS but I have a top/bottom mix of MIC V30s and old label Vet30s in another cab that smokes at all volumes.

Bit of a different mix and somewhat large difference in sensitivity but I really liked the neo creamback and v30 mix

If you are playing hard rock and metal, then EVM12L's. They mix amazingly with V30's. You get insane mid grind, low end punch that will rearrange your organs, and unrivaled clarity and articulation across all registers.

I had the same experience with WGS Vet 30 and ET65 flattening out and turning to mush at high volume, but I have to say the ET90's I got in a cab I bought held up just fine at volume. I'm talking loud Hiwatt with distortion and fuzz volumes.

If you don't ever want your cab to woof out and turn to mush, then definitely get the EV's.

Damn, I thought I was having some deja-vu shit going on. 🤣

Agree with this. Love my Force 12's and EVM12S'.
I've yet to own an EV I didn't love. I had two '80s EVM12L's for decades until this year. I've got four alnico SRO 12's that are my favorite guitar speakers ever. Had a ceramic SRO12 for a minute that I liked but moved on and replaced with a Fane Studio 12L. And have had three Coffee Can SRO 15's.

I came across a 2x12 Thiele with Coffee Can SRO 12's (one re-coned) a while back. I haven't bought it yet, but it's always niggling me in the back of my mind. I keep kicking that can down the road since I've shown a preference for 12S' over SRO's in blind tests, and I have 12S' in need of re-coning. Maybe eventually though...

Ha! I kinda forgot I posted that thread. That was also before I bought the quad of V30's (which are in the Armageddon cab now) and changed plans a little. I'm cleaning out my garage to convert it into my music space and mapping out how I want to set it up. Moving my stuff into double the space I currently have means I can fit more cabs. Along with the couple cabs I have now I'll also be building myself some custom ones. I have most everything figured out except for the Armageddon cab and my 212/115.

Basically I'll have 3 groups of amps/cabs, Modern style, Vintage Style, and Bass/Down-tune. The 2 mentioned cabs can go with either the Modern or Bass/Down-tune depending on the speakers.

Here's what's mostly set in stone as far as cabs in each group

Modern:
  • 412 - Weber Grey Wolf x Wever Silver Wolf
  • 212/215 - Eminence Karnivore x Eminence Legend 1518
  • 212/215 - Weber Grey Wolf x Weber Blue Dog 15"

Vintage:
  • 612 - Sextet Weber Legacy 40oz magnet 75Hz cone
  • 212/215 - Celection V30 x Celestion Fullback
  • 415 - Quad Celestion Fullback
  • 415 - Quad Celection Sidewinder 15" or Quad EVM-15L or Weber Werewolf (dependent on price & availability).
Bass/Down-tune:
  • GK-Neo412 bass cab
  • Ashdown 610 bass cab
The 2 left over are my Armageddon 412 and my 212/115 cab. I know I'll have 2 V30's in one cab and 2 Weber Black Shuck in the other. I know what I would do with the Black Shucks either way so the final outcome is more dependent on which cab the V30's go in. Basically, do I want to pair them with 2-12" speakers or a 15" speaker.

Checking out the V30 x EVM-12L mix sounds promising, more than my original thought of CL80's. That also gives me another thought of maybe a V30 x EVM-15L mix in the 212/115 cab???
