Was listening to Hair Nation on the way into work this morning.
Europe's "Final Countdown" came on.....
I almost turned the channel but let it play thru.
Man that is a Kick ass solo!
Kee Marcello is a great guitarist. I remember seeing them live years back and the guy can rip.
Who else you think falls in the 'unknown gunslinger' list?

**Just found out it was John Norum on that Solo** ;)

Either way it rips!!
Well then John Norum is the underated axeman on that killer solo!

I don't know if I'd call these guys underrated, but definitely under the radar...

Marc Ribot
Nels Cline
Adrian Belew
Steve Salas

I remember Steve Salas....

Didnt he have his own signature guitar? washburn or something if I recall.

Ty Tabor, those who have heard him love him, but for some strange reason, a lot of people have no idea he's as good as he is

John Norum played the solo on Final Countdown, Marcello did the next album.

Cool....Thanks for clearing it up.
I remember that Norum played with Europe but I thought it was before the Final Countdown album.
That solo is so kick ass!! Original and great tone!!
I remember when I saw them in concert it was Kee that was in the band and he did a killer "flight of the bumble bee solo"

I definitely agree. In a time before iTunes, I went out and bought the best of Europe CD just for that solo!

I tried to listen to the rest of the disc... didn't make it. But that solo!

As for other players, I don't hear to much about Warren Haynes on this board. He's not a shred machine, but he's one of the best players I've heard that does what he does.

Unknown or underrated? I agree with mboogman about Warren Haynes. Hes probably the greatest rock/blues guitarist on the planet IMO. Doesnt get talked about very much.

Underrated guitarist - Mick Mars is the first one to come to mind. One of my all time favs too.

What a beautiful song!!

Hes also probably one of the hardest working guitarist in the biz

Chris Whitley, R.I.P., fits the underrated and 'underknown' categories. The Din Of Ecstasy album has some of the most awesome tones I've ever heard. Interesting playing style, using a lot of song-specific tunings on Nationals Triolians, LP Jr.s and Melody Makers through cranked amps for the dirty stuff, among others. A friend sent me a 'mix tape' (remember cassettes?  ) with no track listing. I heard this one song, Narcotic Prayer it turns out, and I stop it, rewind it, play it again, and call him: 'Who is this Tone GOD?!?!?' Been a fan ever since. This album was panned by a lot of his hardcore fans who liked his un-amped traditional alternate tuning stuff, which was also great, but it really had a huge effect on how I thought about my playing and my tone.

I know he had one of the ugliest Caparison guitars ever made. Thank God they never made it into a production model.

Forgot to mention Chris DeGarmo. Queensryche died when he left the band.

John Christ from Danzig..

East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys...

Brian May
Matthias Jabs
Ty Tabor
Neal Schon
Danny Gatton

All monster players that seem to get overlooked in "great guitarist" conversations.

Most incredible relatively unknown...Jeff Kollman.

Pat Benatar's hubby Neil is pretty damn good and criminally underrated.

Oh hell........he is one of my FAVORITE'S!
But I dont mention it for fear of the FLAME wars.......
Lot of guys here think if its not Vai or Yngwie...... they suck. :gethim:

Who's the guy rom Golden Earring or the guy from The Tubes?

There have been some songs on the radio over the years I've heard a million times and the solo's are just stupid, like Golden Earring, and I've never known who the players are. Could be studio cats.

Lukather was on EVERYTHING in the 80's. GREAT player!
