Ozzy's vocals are all overdubbed on Tribute, at least for the main show (don't know about "Goodbye To Romance" or "No Bone Movies"). As far as I know, the only part of Randy's playing that was taken from a different performance was his solo spot at the end of "Suicide Solution", which is from the King Biscuit Flower Hour, Montreal 81 show. The big tell-tale sign that it is lifted from that show on Tribute is that Randy's playing momentarily stops and the very beginning & end of the solo, not to mention the change in his tone.

You can hear the "Tribute" solo here, along with the actual performance of "Suicide Solution" it was taken from (notice no stops in playing before the start/end of the solo):

The Tribute version of "I Don't Know" is also from KBFH.

It's not from the KBFH, Montreal 81 show. "I Don't Know", along with every other song on Tribute (save for "GTR" & "NBM"), are from the Live at Music Hall, Cleveland 81 show, which Kapo_Polenton posted a link to above. The Cleveland 81 performance of "I Don't Know" was played once on a Randy Rhoads special of the old radio show "Metal Shop". Perhaps you are thinking of that by chance?

Here's the KBFH, Montreal 81 performance of "I Don't Know", which is clearly not the same as on Tribute ( for example, Randy plays the descending trill lick before the start of the second verse in the correct spot here, and not a full bar early):

I saw Van Halen a few years ago in Pittsburgh and it was worth it for Eddie's tone alone. It sounded like I was standing next to his rig and I was halfway back in the arena on the floor. Articulate, clear, brown sound, and Eddie was having a blast. David Lee Roth was doing his same identical routine that he does everytime, sliding across the floor, showing his dog catching a Frisbee, etc. The only time he deviated was when he yelled at one of the roadies for hogging the front area that is saved for people with tickets, etc. :)

Wow didn't think I could dislike Roth more but he's a super douche who doesn't even try to sing the tunes the right way or cant. Even the phrasing...really dude? Sad Niles, just sad
Eddie and the band sound great, even the backing vocals. Not MA but still respectable. Honestly would rather it be MA and Sammy at this point.

I'll take the current Roth and being able to hear songs that haven't been played in decades, like "Hear About it Later"...and "Girl Gone Bad"...over ANY Sammy songs

The problem with live is that they no longer are. Even Kiss Alive was altered back in the day...kinda sucks.

What a live album might sound like:

If they wanna release a Roth live thing, why not the pro shot vid and pro recorded stuff they have from the early eighties when they were in their prime?

Steve

I agree Steve!! The Oakland Fair Warning footage for starters!!!

There is a good chance they don't own that footage. They may not be able to

still looking for that boot. I guess some taper is still sitting on it, or at least a few have it.

Ha!
I enjoy Dave.
Train wrecks are fun. Train wrecks with a smile are even better.
Face it, a frontman that has that much disregard for lyric, melody, and key, is operating on a whole different level.
I find that fun, and very rock & roll.

I guess but that would drive me nuts eventually if I were working with someone like that, I think if I'm honest part of it is he used to look so rock and roll and now he looks like such a dork and acts like a silly buffoon so it makes it harder to take the free-form vocals that almost seem purposely bad.

I mean if he tried to sing the original melody once in a while it would help but it always sounds like the rest of the band rehearsed and he blew them off and just is always winging it and badly. It just sounds like crap lead vocal amateur hour in between well rehearsed and sung backup parts. If a guy came to try out for a band and sung anywhere near that badly on those tunes he be gone after the 2nd tune....loved him in the old days and the albums were great but this...not so much.

I wish VH would grab Michael Starr/Ralph Saenz and do a tour.......

Why? Probably because so many fans already have most of that in various unauthorized forms already and wouldn't pay the jacked up prices EVH would most likely charge for it. Besides, go to youtube and watch it. I mean, I've had most of that footage for decades in various forms from different types of trading, but now with the internet, everyone that wants it has it. True, they have better cuts and prob some unreleased stuff, but WGAS now? Fuck EVH for being a greedy, selfish prick for all these years. He should have released it decades ago when it was relevant. I was praying for that stuff in Jr High. I am 42 now. No one really cares anymore. I hate what he has done to my all time favorite band. Even now, he can't do the right thing and bring Mike back. He needs to either bring the original band back or just let it go.

Well only three songs from the Fair Warning tour were ever released so YouTube is not an option. I have pretty much everything else and would pay for a full CD/DVD set of the FW 81 tour!! Maybe people don't care. If EVH was greedy, he would of released almost everything which he still hasn't!! More of prick for not thinking of the fans!!

You're right! It was Metal Shop... Does anyone have a copy of that show? I had it on tape, but lost it. :(

Got the CD finally now and listening to it. I can't say I like Eddies tone... :-(

I'd pay for high quality audio/video pro shot from the earlier shows regardless of what compressed garbage is on YouTube...
