Yup, people are going to complain about why you didn't setup the tones controls a certain way or whatever. An amp i own only got 20 seconds or so of camera time while the one before it got 2-3 minutes but with soo many amps, I'm just glad you took the time and effort to do this.

The amps that suprised me were the H&K Trilogy, the QR (I'm a former owner)...stood up amazingly well here, the Wizard > wow...and the Henning.
Glad ya dug the Henning PlexRod, man! :)

Steve

I just remember all the air coming out of the room and people running into the booth when they lit up the JCM800KK--that thing was punishing.

Just listened again with a fresh pair of ears.

For the most part I stand by my first post, but upon second listen some of the amps sounded a little more similar to each other. As stated above, all of these are killer amps and can be dialed to sound somewhat similar.

Just want to clear something up that said earlier too...the Bones is a KILLER amp and in no way was I putting it down. I'd love to own one. The actual tone of the amp sounded great, but it just sounded like the low end was clipping or breaking up in some way...don't know how to explain it. I should've just kept my mouth shut. I freakin LOVE the Fortin sound so don't take what I said the wrong way Mike, or anyone else.

Another thing I wanted to say is what a great job you guys did in sorting the amps by category. Some of them could ride the line between groups and excel at multiple sounds, but I thought the whole thing was sorted very well. Rock on.

Why do you need to keep your mouth shut? If you don't like something there's nothing wrong with that. I didn't think the Bones sounded that great either or that PWE, that sounded absolutely awful, lots of hype around that thing too. The Chupacabra didn't sound as good as I thought it would either, I liked the stock Ceriatone better. The Wizard sounded very good as well as the Friedman with the new and improved harmonically rich OT.

Ive read the whole thing and no one is really saying anything bad, just voicing there opinion. it's not like anyone over reacted either. Hell it's not even close to what happened when we had a mini ampfest and someone had a shitfit because of the clips .
James, don't take it the wrong way man, it's the nature of the beast. Everyone here knows that you freaking busted your ass doing this and it is greatly appreciated.

Like I said before It's the nature of the beast that some amps are going to sound great and others like hammered shit and that has a lot to do with speakers used, guitar blah blah etc etc. you know the deal. LOL

Since I'm done with the politically correct bullshit, the Fortin sounded like cock on a half shell. There is no getting around it but who cares? I agree with what was said...so big deal and Mike isn't ranting like a loon either! he knows the deal to lol. Hell!! Mike made a sale off of the clip! Id hate it that people feel as if they have to curb there tongue. That's bullshit IMHO.
Hell I LOVE the Fortins and the Camerons and I even thought the Camerons didn't sound that great but this is no refelection on anything that you guys did.
Everyone here already knows that I don't particulary care for the Splawn quickrod. Ive taken a beating voicing my opinion and I Don't give a fuck all ,because it's my opinion, but you want to know what? I thought it sounded fantastic in the video! Like I said, Nature of the beast and all opinion!!!.

Carry on Gents!! Like Mike said no harm no foul and just for the record, it truly is awesome that you did this but you have to take the good with the bad. I for one Don't see this thread taking a turn for the worst at all.

And Steve, Your amp is awesome.. I'm proud of ya man

BREAKING NEWS This just in! All the clips you've heard were Axe-Fx presets into the board. You've all been dupped! :D ;)

sah5150...your amp sounds killer.

James, thanks for taking the time to do this

Yes his amp did sound pretty damm good. There's soo many here that i need to watch. So far though for metal, that H&K really is evil sounding.

FWIW, the PWE was one of my favorites in the Classic Gain round as I said in my first post. I know they're killer amps. Sucks that it died, but that's tubes for ya.:)

Thanks man! The guy who owns it was doing his own shootout a couple of nights before the amp fest, played it for 6 hours cranked up loud and I guess they finally decided to quit during the recording. Sucks, but life goes on.

At least it didn't catch fire like the Mesa Mark V did.

Considering the amount of amps used in the event, it's bound some won't sound their best.
Ever have YOUR RIG sound poopie??
Great job The James Gang for your time, effort and passion for amplifiers and the will to work the event on through!

I've only had a chance to quickly go through a few of the vids but soo far the standouts for me were that little ugly 18 watter, most of Friedman's stuff (honestly, does he do bad mods? All his stuff sounds great) , the ceriatone Plexi, the real stock 70's Marshalls, the Jose (yeah i really dug the mid crunch on that thing, it was probably my top 3 favourite).

Seeing as we are talking opinions only, for me the Reeves may be boner inducing for some but it seems a tad squishy for me and fizzy in parts. I thought the Aldridge modded MArshall was horrible and scooped, and the SLO was brutal. Again tone is subjective and we obviously like what our ears grow to like. I like mid range tight crunch.. I'll have to go back and watch some more.

In the meantime, what the hell is in that Jose exactly? Same as the schem that are floating around? We all know a bunch of people have looked inside that amp, let's hear it.. :gethim:

The amps I dialed in;
Wizard
Southbay Plexi 50
VH4
Reeves
Orange Rockerverb 50
Ceriatone Plexi 100
Ceriatone Chupacabra 100
Both Friedman Marshalls
Hiwatt
Victoria
71 Super Tremolo
Racto

again James, really appreciate you taking the time to do this event. Seeing this list kind of puts things into perspective for me though. You can tell that's how you make a living, because that whole list sounded exceptional. Most of the amps there sounded great to me, but that list has my favorites and the ones that surprised me the most. Well done man.

Really, why? People are obviously going to voice their opinions. That's what it's all about! What works for some people won't for others. I am stoked about these clips! James, you're the man!

I agree... I don't get the sudden negative knee jerk reaction.

Ahhhhhh a breath of fresh air. A forum member who is a great great player not playing the PC shit. Thank you Ralph.

I've really tried my best to be brutally honest without being a dick so my reviews even though I by no means reach the levels of skill some of you guys do were honest to my findings even though I don't shred.

That said....... I've had amps that didn't sound very good clips but in person sounded great. So take these clips in their own context. A good example is the amp I have now which is the Reason Grande... the clips on the web by no means do it justice.

Best ampfest ever. Thank you for doing such a great job.

Oh my, one of the shootout favourites for sale in my sig :D

My votes:

Want it now...Henning!
Gasss....Wizard
Need to play it......Jerry's amp

BTW James thank you very very much for your efforts and may we all remember where just playing amps not trying to stop world hunger!

Im done!

James, thanks a TON for doing this brother!!!

The Henning fucking KILLS!!!

All the others, meh...

I did not take anything wrong as well James, I would give Tweed's left nut to be at the next one!

Steve, I am proud of you bro as your hard work sat there with the best!

I wish the Wizard stuff was not so expensive, always impressed with them and I thought the CCV was lacking in this one as I have played better.
