I have gone back to heads + 2x12's and 2x12 combos.

Death metal? Maybe you should consider a Solid State amp. That's where SS excels.Ampeg VH140C baby.

If you simply have to have tubes on principle 5150 FTW.

Don't forget the tone in your head and the tone that works in the mix are rarely the same.
That death metal scoop sound is cool until you add drums and bass. It turns into farty fizz.
