I am wanting to go tube.

It sounds like your best options are a Single Rec or a 5150 and an Avatar cab 2x12", you really don't need a 4x12".

single recs got good deep tone yes?

Yeah, I'm not a big fan, but for what you want them to do I would say that would work.

I'm just not sure what you mean by "deep", I know you want a heavy ass distortion, but most modern amps can get ridiculously bass heavy, the problem is most amps/cabs fart out when you add too much bass, IMO making you sound like complete ass.

My favorite heavy amp is between the Uberschall/Herbert, but in your price range I would have to lean towards the Rec.

But I'm a nut job, my first tube amp was a Diezel Einstein.

:D yeah, I want something with like deep riffs and melodic leads.

I've been a death metal player for over 10 years now and I have owned just about every amp on the face of the planet that's known to be a good death metal amp. So far the two I'm happiest with are a dual rectifier and an Engl Special Edition. By no means am I telling you to save up the $4000 to get the SE but I owned a few cheaper Engls that do the trick too. If you go the recto route take my word and boost it with a metal zone (distortion OFF). Cannibal Corpse does this and their tone is TO DIE FOR! Ever seen them live? Their amps will rip your face off. Engl Powerball V1's can be had nowadays for $1400 or so used. I was pretty happy with my Powerball and I just plugged straight in, no pedals. Several people are happy with Fireballs but I personally found them to sound a little thin, especially when you turn it up loud enough to hang with a band.

Last but not least... This is the best $400 you'll ever spend if you want great death metal tone:

IMO a cabinet will make more difference than an amp head. People REALLY underestimate how much speakers and cabinet construction shape your tone.

I have the 4x12 and it is by far the best purchase I've made gear wise.

thank you. this really helps me. :D

I have a Mesa Single Recto and a Peavey VTM that I go back and forth on. The VTM just had some work done by Jerry at FJA mods, OT/choke/bias mod, and is a killer. Not a crapload of gain but pushed it's awesome, and it has phenomenal clarity. You can find these all day long for around $300 or so, great starter tube amp that you can get great Marshally tones out of.
