Was Randy Rhoads this good at this age?

Hmmm. I don't know, I don't think it would be right to take anything away from the kid who had enough passion for the instrument to learn to be able to play this so well. Kudos to her, amazing talent! I also think that it wouldn't be fair really to criticize her for not being creative as we have nothing more to go on, and for the simple fact as she hasn't lived life and experienced enough to have something to write about yet....she's a child. She'll get there, IMO but you gotta respect her gift. I know guys that have been playing for 20+ years trying to do what she did in this video and still can't do it. Good for her, cool music she chose to learn too. I know one thing, if that was my kid I'd be damn proud!

Nobody is taking anything away from her, but I'm not sure I agree with your reason why she can't be "creative". I mean, she's lived at least 10 years right? That's like saying a 10 year old is incapable of telling a story, or drawing a picture, about something they like or dislike.....I assure you, a 10 year old is capable of creative expression - guitar is her medium. Suppose for a minute she actually wrote and recorded Technical Difficulties.....we'd listen and say wow, that kicks ass, especially from a 10 year old. Then what if we found out that instrumental song was about the hard time she had putting a Barbie doll house together? So what, right?

I know it's not PC to express an opinion (and that's the key - it's simply an expression of an opinion) of "meh" when it involves little kids - and if you're not totally blown away you're just bitter cause you can't do it....probably in a lot of cases that's true, but what I want to see (especially after about 4 years of YouTube saturation) is creation, not regurgitation - regardless of the talent involved. If I want to listen to Racer X, I'll put a Racer X disc in. Do I respect the dedication it took her to get to that point, absofuckinglutely, but as a consumer of a musical product, I want to see that same dedication produce something other than a COVER.

A friend of mine who was at GIT in 88' told me that supposedly a fairly well known players audition tape to GIT was him doing Yngwie's Far Beyond the Sun twice as fast as YJM played it...and flawlessly clean too. I remember thinking, wow, impressive - but why would I want to listen to that? :D I'd want to see/hear it once, to see if it was real....and then I'd be done with it.

But that's just my opinion.....

Fuck PC! Ok, that's gotten twisted a bit.....I'm not sayin' that I think she can't be creative or kids can't which is ludicrous(which is the opposite of the overall tone and obvious intent of my post)....but I definitely think that as a person has more experiences in life and more time with their craft they have more to write about and more colors to paint with so to speak....and my first instinct overall is to think to cut the kid some slack....I just don't think playing at this level is a monkey see monkey do kind of thing, there's a lot more to it than that in my experience and that's before even counting the creative writing part which is a talent in itself. It's like: a guy and his friends are hanging out and one of his 10 year old kids comes over and plays something completely awesome like the girl in this video and someone's first comment is "yeah that's great kid where's the fucking opus"?...Lol, just seems comical to me, I dunno.

No doubt...I understand what you're saying. Talent as shown in those videos is rare, at any age....I'm just expressing what I'd like to see someone with THAT kind of talent (which I don't have) do. So, if I'm hanging out with my friends and said 10 year old comes over and plays that tune for me...my comment will be that's great kid! No request for a fucking opus will follow because, yes, actually saying that to such a kid would be ridiculous.

Talented young girl.. but Randy was better... Have I heard any recordings of Randy when he was 10? nope.. but heard a recording of him as a teenager at a party, I think he was 16.. and you could tell it was Randy.. playn' his music.. :checkthisout:

That make me smile so big:) The great guitar we all love here is awesome and timeless and to see kids recognizing that and carrying it to new generations is something to behold. We were lucky to grow up when we did, I feel that way anyway.

Bingo!

As for the youngster the op posted about, I am blown away by the skills. Why would you compare kids like this to anyone? Just enjoy it for what it is, a new generation of guitar players playing metal, a genre and instrument many consider dying.

As the others have mentioned, who cares how good XYZ 12 year old kid is now.. look at the amount of players they have had to base their style and influence on. More importantly, Randy wrote all those riffs and licks. That was his style. Not many of these wizz kids have or will ever create music on par with their influences. At this point it has all been done. Late 70's there was still room to evolve and hence the reason why guys like Randy, EVH, and Malmsteen were blowing people's minds.... much like Hendrix did the generation preceding it.

Not a fair comparison. She had the advantage of this guy for her father:

It is perhaps fun to compare the progress of one prodigy to those of another and extrapolate where the new prodigy will end up, but really nature/nurture and the persons own self expression take over. I heard or read something on NPR years ago about precocious prodigies, that they aren't so rare, but the problem for them is that they rarely transition into adult prodigies and often suffer from depression at the lost adulation.

With that said, I like to look at Jason Becker and wonder if Anton Oparin is better at the same age:

Yup. Personality is what I like in a player. Something that is recognizable when you hear a song. Randy had it, Brian May, Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Malmsteen and a whole lot of others. Kids ripping arpeggios at a million miles an hour does not do it for me. Faster or more technical does not equal better!

She's a talent for sure. I've seen no originality though. Perfecting an existing song isn't as impressive as creating your own tune. Who knows though what will happen. She's only 10.

Asking a 10 years old to compose her own songs is kind of ridiculous. The only one that can do that was Mozart and he was once in a generation talent.

I don't know what recording you were listening to but check out Randy Rhoads in conert in 1979. I'm guessing he was around 23 at that time. Do you hear anything that stand out or make you go WOW? I think Randy was surrounded by some of the best musicians during the Ozzy years and that help push his playing to legendary status. Same thing happened to Jake E Lee. Once Jake left Ozzy, he was never the same.

What's this better stuff? That was awesome!
I love the smile on her face.

agree as a guitarist he changed but DUDE Badlands was SO FUCKING AWESOME. Jakes song writing was just outstanding on the 2 (well 3) albums. Sure he wasn't doing any "gymnastic" playing but it was just great rock/metal
