Was Randy Rhoads this good at this age?

agree as a guitarist he changed but DUDE Badlands was SO FUCKING AWESOME. Jakes song writing was just outstanding on the 2 (well 3) albums. Sure he wasn't doing any "gymnastic" playing but it was just great rock/metal

Talented young girl.. but Randy was better... Have I heard any recordings of Randy when he was 10? nope.. but heard a recording of him as a teenager at a party, I think he was 16.. and you could tell it was Randy.. playn' his music..

I don't know what recording you were listening to but check out Randy Rhoads in conert in 1979. I'm guessing he was around 23 at that time. Do you hear anything that stand out or make you go WOW? I think Randy was surrounded by some of the best musicians during the Ozzy years and that help push his playing to legendary status. Same thing happened to Jake E Lee. Once Jake left Ozzy, he was never the same.

Gotta disagree man, but first, I would NEVER take anything away from that talented little girl. She deserves everything she gets for all the practice and hours she has put into the love of the instrument. The OP asked if Randy was this good when he was 10. MY theory is all questions are easy when you have the answers. All songs are easy after they have been written. Maybe she can do some Leo Kottke with her feet while she's braiding her hair, hell I don't know. But Randy, as stated before, was a pioneer. Gotta remember, disco was still going on while these dudes were rocking. It wasn't just the band, it was his tone and chops that brought me back to ozzy in 80.. or something like that. I could barely understand what the fuck Ozzy was singing about anyway. I was 8 and trying to learn Randy's riffs.

As far as Jake goes, Jake, wrote most of the songs, I think it was Ultimate sin, while Ozzy was in rehab or some shit, and he just came in with everything already done and did vocals. Ozzy never gave Jake credit for Bark at the moon for fucks sake.. Jake did that.. and it is awesome. And yeah, Badlands kicks ass! I'm not knocking the girl guys, I'm not that BIG of a dick.. c'mon! I just don't think she's a pioneer... but I hope she proves me wrong.

Well said!!! Plus I cannot think of too many recent pioneers on the guitar. Randy is definitely not the most technical guitarist to ever live, but he was a pioneer who created a style/sound and wrote some killer riffs, songs, and solos that stand the test of time.

It is perhaps fun to compare the progress of one prodigy to those of another and extrapolate where the new prodigy will end up, but really nature/nurture and the persons own self expression take over. I heard or read something on NPR years ago about precocious prodigies, that they aren't so rare, but the problem for them is that they rarely transition into adult prodigies and often suffer from depression at the lost adulation.

With that said, I like to look at Jason Becker and wonder if Anton Oparin is better at the same age:

Yep, I think the kid is amazing. But... as said above child prodigies are not as uncommon as one may think, it happens all the time on piano and violin too. But they very rarely stick with it through adulthood.

Randy was Randy because of himself, because of his love of the guitar as an instrument and the drive to continually improve.

Asking a 10 years old to compose her own songs is kind of ridiculous. The only one that can do that was Mozart and he was once in a generation talent.

A 10 year old who exhibits that kind of talent and control of the instrument? I don't think it's ridiculous at all...It would however, be ridiculous to expect that 10 year old's compositions to be instant "classics" that will still be known decades later.

As was mentioned before, child "prodigies" are more common than people think, just check out YouTube.
