I agree. Vastly prefer medics morin jmp to everything else I've heard. That amp is super raw, and ALIVE sounding. It reminds me a bit of a couple Langner modded 2203s I've played, but a little less gainy and a bit more girthy.
Without having played a Morin, I'd agree with that assessment.

I'm super jealous of that amp, what a thrash monster. Its got a really unique growl in the midrange, too.

I gotta upgrade my recording equipment to keep up with the Joneses ?

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s absolutely scary sounding to me. In the room with it is just…. Scary. It’s just completely out of control I wish I could truly capture it, but I do my best. Mike morin mods are to me, the best around. He was the guy in LA. Yes everyone knows suhr, CAE etc back then, but the big boys all had morins in their studio, and they never come up for sale like ever. I got chills when I heard one for the first time 17 years or so ago and I’ve wanted one ever since. I’ve never seen a 100 watt for sale so when I did, I had to grab it. You might see this particular amp on an STL tones release in the future, we will see. But it is devastating, that is the perfect word for it.
Curious, how tight and gainy is it without a boost? I have a feeling it's a moderately tight amp, at best, by itself, due to some of the other out of control aspects of it. Most amps with a surgically tight bottom, the mids and highs suffer because they get sterile.

I get something very similar to that clip by dialing the bite way back and increasing punch. I'm not shy with the gain either lol. I'm also using the same speakers as the OP.

I generally am going for a far different sound, but I'm going to give that a try. I normally have bite around 5-6 and punch 3-4 depending on which channel. I normally use old broken in uk v30s, but I have an old 1960b with vented t75s on the way, that I'm going to be using for a more 80s thrash thing.

I’ll make a clip of it unboosted. The amp has two gain controls that pull out independently from each other aka Jose style, but I don’t consider it in the vein of a jose amp at All. The amp with both gains pulled is very similar to the dirty tree boosting it with both gains pushed in ( that’s the way I recorded it with the dirty tree. The dirty tree just seems to make it slightly more focused and sharp in the midrange than with the gains pulled and no boost. I’ll make a comparison clip and you can be the judge :).

I'm very interested in hearing this too!

Cool thanks for the info and upcoming clips. Do you know what's going on under the hood? Such as, if the Morin uses clipping diodes, zeners, etc or other solid state components as part of the gain circuit?

Unfortunately I don’t know much. What I can tell you is he only did about 50 or so like mine that had an extra transformer that was custom made, including the original transformer that came in the amp. I texted mike a few times over the last year, very strange guy to talk to haha. Nice guy though, but didn’t get much info. He does remember doing my specific amp though he said. Said he did this one specifically in about 1995. It’s a purple JMP so it sticks out alittle Atleast, this was known as his “head from hell” mod. From what he said, he basically changed what he was doing over time and went with the flow of what he was doing during a certain era. He said he did about 10 head from hell mods like mine, and he described it as “just what I was doing at the time, somewhat more compressed sounding, totally redone eq section” etc, I know, not much to say haha. It has 2 additional preamp tubes and all tube effects loop as well.

Still that's cool you were able to get that much out of him about it.

Especially 90s era heads like this intrigue me a lot.

It’s absolutely killer. People think it’s BS except for us guitar nerds, but these amps really were prized pieces in studios in LA etc. they just never get sold ever. Tons of records in the late 90s early 2000s had these all over them ( linkin park hybrid theory and papa roaches first record come to mind) but no one really ever knew, mostly I’m guessing because it was pre internet and how information evolves these days. I’ve wanted one for 15+ years and could never find a 100 watter, but I got lucky I guess. But who needs 100 watts AM I RITE!?!?!?

that Morin halfstack has been on reverb forever, surprised it hasnt sold

Oh I know the feeling completely - it was my obsession with 90s power metal and iced earths 90s stuff that let me to my own amp. I can REALLY, REALLY relate. Having heard your morin a couple times, I swear i've heard the sound much more than LP and papa roach though, its just one of those sounds you heard all over that era of music and you didn't even realize it.

And 100 watts is obviously pointless, because we never have written an E-book about our insane bedroom recording skills - as the Lord Tone-Jesus said, anything missing from an el84 bedroom head can easily be rectified with judicious use of post-eq and the right IR. Because obviously mere mortals just need his 50$ ebook for an apotheosis into becoming mutt lange.

For anyone thats interested, 2 clips with the morin unboosted using just the gain knobs on the amp pulled. I also dialed the mids way up, as the tone stack has been completely changed and it gets pretty aggressive this way. But this is just some stereotypical 80s style chugs, with a slight bit of eventide and delay for good measure :) one Marshall cab, one Mesa cab clip. Enjoy!

*guitar was my les paul standard with Aldrich pickups, love these things.

My god… this is an incredible sounding amp… Jesus. Sorry to boast, but fuck this thing is incredible! @thegame @DanTravis62 for you guys above.

It sounds incredible, I'd boast too! Especially the Marshall cab clip above sounds crisp as hell. That amp just has a personality to it, instantly recognizable.

@DanTravis62 and @thegame … trying out noiseash’s new neve plugin emulations… these are the best Neve console emulations I’ve heard bar none. The eq is incredible. Mic pres are amazing and all very different. Anyways check out this morin clip again but with some of the noiseash flavor on it. Probably the absolute best high end I’ve ever gotten on guitars ever.

That extra high end really brings out the sparkle in the eventide too, very cool

I have a Morin modded 1980 JMP 50 watter. With the 2 push/pull pots , the sensitivity, the tube fx loop, etc. . I had a Morin preamp too and sold it to someone on this forum (Not sure why I sold it.. ) .. Anyway, congratulations

Eric
