So after a night of playing, how do you like it?
Ok, well, I now understand exactly how everything works and I've tested a bunch of combinations of settings and it is very, very versatile. I bought this amp because there is something about the Cameron voicing that I really like. It isn't really like a Marshall per se, even a lightly rodded Marshall, but it isn't like a Boogie to me either. It is hard for me to describe, but it is a great voicing - amazing presence without being overwhelming in the high end - it just hits you in the guts instead of piercing your eardrums. The bass response on the amp is like no other amp I've experienced - it doesn't dominate the tone, but it adds a huge girth to the overall sound of the amp. The amp I built will be much more traditional Marshall sounding even though it will have a boatload of gain available...
Cleans are nice -very usable and it is amazing in the high gain mode how much gain the "clean" channel has! Damn...
The saturation switches are genius - I definitely like the mid-sat position for rhythms and the high-sat for leads, although you can get some nice lead tones in mid-sat. To me the off position is like switching the whole amp to low-gain mode. I do love that you can switch the entire amp (at once - all channels) between the high and low gain modes. I wish that was foot switchable because it would have been AWESOME. There are cool tones to be had in both modes, but honestly the reason to get the Cameron is for the roaring high-gain mode... If I didn't have other amps that cover that low gain territory it would have been great to have the overall gain for the amp foot switchable...
This amp really comes alive when it is freakin' loud and I had my share of time yesterday playing it that way, but I was also shocked at how good it sounds at bedroom volume as well. Once things got later last night, I had to turn it down (my wife was ready to kill me anyway, but she knew there was nothing she could say with a new toy arriving.

), but I was still grinning ear to ear listening to it at bedroom volume in my W/D/W setup, happily switching channels and trying different combinations of settings - of course, you can't hear the differences as dramatically when you changes settings at that low volume, so tweaking will continue LOUD, but I was happy that it was even possible and still sounded nice, maintaining the basic character of the tone... If I had my choice though, I'd always play it LOUD and that is cool, because honestly, some amps like my MKIV actually sounded better at low volume to my ears...
I still have a lot of tweaking to do to experience all of it, but I had a blast just playing into the night last night. I'm tired, but happy...
Now, I'm just dying for the weekend and my tubes to get here so I can fire up the amp I built for the first time and test it out. I'm nervous, but excited!!
